MALAWI. Lilongwe: Top officials in the Malawi government have been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.
President Lazarus Chakwer’s second in command in his Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Mohammed Sidik Mia is among the officials hit by the virus.
Mia is also the Minister for Transport and Public works.
Others officials affected include, the Mining Minister, Rashid Gaffar, the Local government Minister, Lingson Belekanyama and the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Madalitso Kazombo.
The Minister of Industry, Roy Kachale and the son to former President, Joyce Banda are also affected.
The Labour Minister, Ken Kandodo is convalescent of the disease after being discharged from a hospital COVID-19 center. Mia made the announcement through a statement from his communication team.
“COVID-19 is real. I urge you all to adhere to the set guidelines. Anyone who has been in close contact with me should get tested,” he said.

Who else has been affected?
Celebrity Veteran Broadcaster, Maria Chidzanja Nkhoma succumbed to the pandemic on the morning of January 9th.
She had been admitted at the main referral hospital, Kamuzu Central.
Nkhoma had worked for the state broadcaster, Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), then later Zodiak Broadcasting Station, a private media house, established by Information Minister, Gospel Kazako.
Two Academics at the Mzuzu University had died in a space of four days since the second wave of the pandemic began.
A former cabinet Minister, Cornelius Mwalanda, who had earlier worked for the United Nations in Geneva, remains the most notable senior political figure to die of the pandemic last year. As of January 8, 314 new cases have been recorded within 24 hrs.
