MALAWI. Lilongwe: Malawi President, Lazarus Chakwera has declared a state of national disaster following the death of his two cabinet ministers within hours.
He made the declaration on January 12 in a state of national address.
The President said the country had experienced one of it’s darkest days in history and that national flags must fly at half-mast.
“I have directed the Ministries of education, health, home land Security and Civic education to come up with new measures e fighting the pandemic.”
Chakwera has also pleaded for the international community to assist Malawi during its moment of darkness.

No One Spared
On Tuesday, prison officials confirmed that 17 prisoners had tested positive of COVID-19 at Zomba maximum, one of the country’s largest prisons.
To make this worse, some returnees coming from South Africa were arrested and sent to police cells.
They had earlier destroyed and burned hostels at a prison training base which was turned into a quarantine centre.
This had worried a medical Professor at the country’s College of Medicine Adamson Muula who called the act an “ escalation of an already fragile situation.”

On January 12, police were seen beating up street vendors selling home furniture who had refused to put on facemasks.
The Education Ministry had ruled out the closure of schools.
Many institutions including the Catholic University and Saint Andrews, an upper middle class international high school had their members tested positive.
