INDIA. Maharashtra: The proposal to rename Osmanabad as Dharashiv and Aurangabad as Sambhajinagar was approved by the Shiv Sena-led Maharashtra cabinet on Wednesday.

The Shiv Sena’s plan to rename the two cities comes at a time when the party is experiencing a significant political crisis due to the defection of a sizable portion of its MLAs.

The renaming is considered as the Shiv Sena’s attempt to bolster its hindutva credentials in what may be its final significant action in the 31-month-old Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi administration, as it faces a vote of confidence that is set to occur Thursday.

The Shiv Sena is being gradually weaned away from its basic philosophy, according to the rebellious MLAs, who have been questioning the party’s commitment to Hindutva over the past week.

They claim this is happening at the request of secular parties like the Congress and the NCP.
