NIGERIA. Kano State: The Kano state government has launched a massive tree planting to impact of deforestation and global warming.
The tree-planting campaign was done in collaboration with Givfree.
Flagging off the campaign in Kano, the state Commissioner for Environment, Dr Kabiru Getso stated that the campaign is statewide and is targeted at one million trees planting across the 44 local councils.
“The move comes with a series of government policies and frameworks anchored on environmental safety and sustainability, biodiversity conservation, desertification, pollution control, flood and erosion control”, Getso said.
Government’s pledge to residents
The government tasked residents to ensure proper personal hygiene and environmental sanitation, avoid open defecation and keep the environment clean of human excreta as well as ensuring safe and clean water to forestall new outbreaks of cholera.
Getso also noted that Kano state Government has put in place majors and programmes intervention to curb divers of environmental problems affecting the state.
The State has also set up an Afforestation Agency, which will be in charge and to coordinate the planting of trees.

“We have keyed into the National Green Wall Project where funds and lands for the establishment of community tree nurseries and plantations are provided in the state”, Getso added.
Government policy
In the government’s efforts to achieve these goals, it has drafted the state pollution control bill as well as the state forestry bill for strict compliance with environmental laws.
The government has also recruited 1,000 sanitation vanguards to guide the environment and ensure adequate compliance with environmental regulations.
