J&J’s Janssen Signs MoU With MoHAP On Mental Health

The MoU was signed between His Excellency Dr Yousif Mohammed Al Serkal, Director-General of the Emirates Health Services Establishment (EHSE), and Jamie Phares, Managing Director of Janssen GCC.

United Arab Emirates. Dubai. Janssen, one of the pharmaceutical companies of Johnson & Johnson signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) at Arab Health 2021. The partnership reinforces the longstanding synergies between the two entities that first collaborated on an agreement in 2018 and underscores their shared goals of delivering world-class mental health services to the citizens of the UAE.

The MoU was signed between His Excellency Dr Yousif Mohammed Al Serkal, Director-General of the Emirates Health Services Establishment (EHSE), and Jamie Phares, Managing Director of Janssen GCC. Through this MoU, the two partners will work towards a common vision of increased awareness and improvement of psychiatric services.  Public advocacy emphasizing the importance of providing quality care and early intervention in addressing mental health is a key deliverable. Additionally, the MoU seeks to develop programs on awareness and prevention for mental illness, aid access to mental health services, and community awareness through activation of country wide programs.

Jamie Phares, Managing Director Janssen GCC, said “Our mission is to develop new solutions and innovations that not only improve, but transform the lives of people living with mental illness. As a company, Janssen is committed to improve the way in which mental health disorders are prevented, diagnosed, and treated by building on its proven innovative approach and through breakthrough technologies.”

The MoU aligns with the UAE’s National Policy for the Promotion of Mental Health and enhancing its awareness as well as developing, strengthening and expanding comprehensive, integrated services for all citizens.

Globally, one in four people are affected by mental health issues at some point in their lives and is among the leading causes of ill health worldwide. This burden continues to grow. People with mental health issues experience disproportionately higher rates of disability and mortality. Presently, the burden of mental health issues is at over 5% globally.
