UNITED STATES: UFC welterweight champion “The Nigerian Nightmare” Kamaru Usman is the man who made history at UFC-261 by becoming the first fighter to knockout Jorge Masvidal in the UFC. Usman has fought 3 times in span of 9 months. He is currently the most active champion in all the UFC divisions.
In a statement, Usman’s manager Ali Abdelaziz said that Kamaru Usman wants to fight Michael Chiesa next at UFC-263 alongside his friend the current UFC middleweight champion Israel “The Last Stylebender” Adesanya.
Abdelaziz said that Usman had called him and confirmed the date as June 12. “Kamaru asked me who has the longest win streak in the division in the top 5 or 6. I said Chiesa. He said let’s go Chiesa, Boom,” he added.
“Usman wanted to fight someone who has the longest winning streak and only Leon Edwards has a better win streak than Michael Chiesa in the welterweight division but Leon Edwards is already booked as he is going to fight Nate Diaz in the co-main event of UFC-262. That’s the reason Usman wants to fight Michael Chiesa who is on a four-fight winning streak.”
Apparently, the fans are not pleased with Usman’s decision as they wanted to see him fight Colby Covington again. Covington is the only fighter who has given Usman a tough time in the octagon. When Covington and Usman fought for the first time Usman broke Covington’s jaw in the 2nd round but still Covington gave Usman a tough competition. According to the judges’ scorecards, they were 2-2 going into the 5th round but Usman tko’d Covington. This fight is considered among the best fights in the UFC history.

Usman said in an interview that he wants to see some activity and want to fight those fighters who are active. Meanwhile, after his loss against Usman, Covington fought only once (against Tyron Woodley) and Covington hasn’t fought anyone since September 19, 2020.
The fight with Chiesa is not confirmed yet but we will see as the time passes that who is going to be the next opponent of current welterweight king Kamaru Usman.
