India’s Medal Tally Increases As PV Sindhu And  Lakshya Sen Bags Gold at CWG 2022

INDIA: In the last badminton match of the women’s singles competition at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, Canadian Michelle Li was defeated by double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu on Monday.

To win the gold medal for India, PV Sindhu defeated Michelle Li by scores of 21-15 and 21-13. This is Sindhu’s first gold medal at a single Commonwealth Games in her career.

Despite Sindhu’s early advantage, her opponent displayed good competition. The Commonwealth Games’ final badminton match was won by Sindhu in just two games, 21-15, and 21-13.

PV Sindhu had a strong start. Halfway through the first game, the Indian shuttler had an 11-8 advantage. Despite providing her Indian opponent with fierce competition, Michelle Li lost every rally. In the opening set, Sindhu prevailed 21–15.

As the second game began, Michelle Li levelled up her tempo, but PV Sindhu stole the victory from her. Every time the Canadian made a mistake, Sindhu’s lead grew more and more. With an 11-6 edge, Sindhu was in a favourable situation halfway through the second game.

Sindhu’s advantage was cut to 13-11 after the break by Michelle Li. She required 10 more points to win the gold, which she did.

PV Sindhu earlier defeated Singapore’s Yeo Jia Min 21-19 21-17 in a 49-minute match to advance to her second consecutive final. PV Sindhu, who has a silver and a bronze from the 2018 and 2014 editions, rode on her technical superiority to do so. In the team competition, the Indians also defeated Min.

Meanwhile, In the badminton men’s singles match at the ongoing , Lakshya Sen had to battle hard to defeat Malaysia’s and win a gold for the country.

Ng Tze Yong 19-21 21-9 21-16. The world number 10 barely dropped Game 1 but won Game 2 with a commanding 21-9 score. After taking an early lead in Game 3, Lakshya was pulled by Yong to the finish, where he sealed the game at 21-16 and won his first CWG gold medal. The pair have faced off against one another three times, with Lakshya winning three of those encounters.
