JAPAN. Tokyo: Indian men’s hockey team made history today after defeating Germany in the bronze medal match. With this win, the team ended the country’s 41-year wait for an Olympic medal. India won its last Olympic medal in hockey way back in the 1980 Moscow Games.
24-year-old Simranjeet Singh stole the limelight by scoring two fantastic goals in the match. Along with this, Harmanpreet Singh, Hardik Singh, Rupinder Pal Singh also scored one goal respectively.
In the match, India conceded an early goal as the German player Timur Oruz scored in the second minute of the bronze medal clash.
Giving a solid reply to the German side, Simranjeet Singh scored a goal to level the score 1-1. India scored two more goals in the second quarter and at the halfway stage the match was evenly poised at 3-3.
Germany started the fourth quarter with an early goal but the Indian defense managed to keep their nerves.
In the fourth quarter, Rupinder Pal Singh scored a goal after getting a penalty stroke. Simranjeet then scored again to give India a two-goal lead going into the final 15 minutes of the contest.
After the country’s exciting win over Germany, social media was abuzz with congratulatory messages for the Indian men’s hockey team.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the men’s hockey team on bringing back glory to the country and said that it indeed is a historic day, and it will truly be etched in the memory of every Indian.
Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir also congratulated the team by calling the win “bigger than any World Cup”.
