India. New Delhi. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) has banned 47 apps, which were variants and cloned copies of the 59 apps banned earlier in June according to a tweet posted by DD News.
Though, it has been reported that the announcement would take place officially soon. The Indian government previously banned apps including Tiktok, Vmate, Bigo Live, Wechat, Helo, CamScanner, SHAREit, and UC Browser, among others. That ban was announced under the provisions of Section 69A of the Information Technology Act.
The government had commanded telcos to block access to all those apps as well as their correlated websites shortly after announcing the decision widely through a press release. It also directed Apple and Google to remove the banned apps from their respective app stores in the country.
India has drawn up a list of 275 Chinese apps which will inspect for any breach of national security and user privacy, signing heightened examination and the prospects of more Chinese internet companies being banned in the country, according to people aware of the developments
Chinese Investment. Chinese Internet companies have about 300 million distinctive users in India, signifying that nearly two-thirds of Smartphone users in the country have downloaded a Chinese app, according to industry estimates.
Amid the Chinese apps being examined now are 14 MI apps by Xiaomi as well as lesser-known ones such Capcut and FaceU. Apps from other Chinese internet and tech majors like Meitu, LBE Tech, Perfect Corp, Sina Corp, Netease Games, Yoozoo Global are also present.
Increase downloads of clones. After India banned 59 Chinese apps, many of their replica and alike apps had risen to the top of the Google Play rankings which includes Snack Video, Likee Lite. Astonishingly, Snack Video owned by Chinese Kuaishou, got 10 million new downloads between June 29 and July 19, according to data from app analytics firm Sensor Tower. This was roughly 59 times of the 172,000 downloads the app got between June 8 and June 28, which is the month before the ban.
