INDIA: As the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Mumbai prepares to welcome its inaugural student cohort, the institution reveals its distinctive logo, drawing inspiration from the idiom of ‘moving mountains.’ Crafted by the National Institute of Design’s (NID) Bengaluru campus, the logo signifies the culmination of various elements reflecting the institute’s essence, including its location nestled by hills and its expertise in supply chain management and logistics.

The logo features a mountain-shaped design with interconnected triangles forming a block-chain pattern, with the letters ‘IIM Mumbai‘ beneath, creating the contour of a hand carrying the mountain. According to IIM Director Manoj K Tiwari, the hills surrounding the institute by the Vihar Lake inspired the multiple interconnected triangles, symbolizing the institute’s proficiency in supply chain management and network enterprises. The letters ‘IIM Mumbai’ represent a hand carrying the mountains, serving as a reminder of Herculean tasks and Hanumant Prayas, drawing parallels to Lord Hanuman lifting an entire mountain—a metaphor for large logistical and interconnected activities.

IIM Mumbai, established as the 21st IIM in August 2023 following the Central government’s approval to amend the IIM Act, undertook a comprehensive review of established IIMs, such as IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Bangalore, to adapt best practices. Redesigning the logo was part of this process to give the institute a distinct identity within the IIM system. Like many other IIMs, the logo includes a Sanskrit line, ‘Dyanam Jayati Sarvatra,’ translating to ‘Knowledge triumphs everywhere.’

The institute’s earlier logo, as the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), featured an ancient torch called ‘Mashal,’ symbolizing industrial growth, with the Devanagari script ‘Udyog Pragati’ below it. With its new status as IIM Mumbai, the institute embraces a fresh visual identity encapsulated in the symbolic representation of moving mountains.
