INDIA: Guru Purnima is celebrated each year on the full moon day of Ashadha month; this day is entirely dedicated to the ‘Guru’s’ (teachers). In honour to recognise the importance of a teacher in one’s life, this day is celebrated. Guru Purnima is an Indian and Nepalese festival. Hindus, Jains and Buddhists typically cherish the Guru Purnima festival.
The word Guru has a Sanskrit significance- ‘gu’ means darkness or ignorance, and ‘ru’ denotes the remover of that darkness. Hence, a teacher removes darkness from a student’s life and makes them capable enough to face the world. Knowledge has the ability to change the world, and this ability comes from a tutor.
This day marks the first peek of the lunar cycle after the peak of the solar cycle. This year Guru Purnima coincided with the rare Supermoon appearance. This day is also entitled Vyasa Purnima as Ved Vyasa, the author of the Mahabharata, was born on this auspicious day. The Purnima Tithi (exact timing) is about to happen from 4:00 am July 13 till 12:06 am July 14.
Importance of Guru in one’s life
A teacher is a pioneer in every student’s life, whether the parents or a mentor. Everyone needs a person who can guide and teach the essential lessons of life. The apex school of learning comes first from parents and then transferred to a teacher. Knowledge without guidance is like a way without direction.
Famous physicist Albert Einstein once said: “It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge.”
Indian philosopher Swami Vivekananda said: “You must grow from within.” Nobody can teach you or make you spiritual. There is no teacher other than your own soul.”
