The gunmen opened fire on the convoy from the ambush side but with the help of the military, police and the Department of State Service (DSS) quickly responded by opening fire at the criminals back to disperse them. Katsina is one of the states most affected by banditry. Hundreds of people have been killed, thousands kidnapped and many displaced in the state as a result of the continued issue of banditry.

Other states that are suffering from similar banditry attacks include Sokoto, Zamfara and Kaduna, and Niger and Kaduna states.

An assistant commissioner of Police, Aminu Umar and a police officer were confirmed to have died as gunmen ambush a team of police on patrol in Dutsinma the same day Buhari’s convoy was attacked.

According to the Police Spokesperson in the state, Gambo Isah, Umar and his team were on a “clearance operation” when they were ambushed by “terrorists numbering over 300 on motorcycles, shooting sporadically with AK-47 rifles and General-Purpose Machine Guns.”

However, it could be recalled that in 2014 convoy of Buhari was caught in an explosion that rocked Kaduna state. Buhari escaped unhurt in the explosion that occurred in the busy Kawo market area of the city, however, three of his security aides were injured.
