UNITED STATES: Google has unveiled three powerful tools designed to enhance image understanding and counter online misinformation. These tools, “About this image,” “Fact Check Explorer,” and “Search Generative Experience,” offer users the ability to verify image history, access metadata, and fact-check assessments, providing invaluable resources in the battle against misinformation.
About this image
“About this image” is now available to global English-language users in Google Search. This tool allows users to verify image authenticity and background, providing the following key information:
– Image history, allowing users to determine when an image first appeared in Google Search and if it was published on other websites before, preventing context manipulation.
– Insights on how other websites use and describe the image, including information from news outlets and fact-checking websites, aiding in evaluating image claims.
– Access to image metadata, including markers revealing AI generation or enhancement for Google AI-generated images.
Fact Check Explorer
Fact Check Explorer aids journalists and fact-checkers in obtaining in-depth insights into images and topics. It uses claim review markup to detect and present fact-check assessments from independent organizations worldwide. Users can upload or enter image URLs to check if they have been fact-checked and gain an overview of associated contexts and their evolution over time.
Google has introduced a beta version of Image Search within the FactCheck Claim Search API, allowing authorized users to streamline image verification and create unique fact-checking solutions for their audience.
Search Generative Experience (SGE)
SGE users can now access AI-generated descriptions of sources, along with information about reputable websites discussing the source. These descriptions are accessible in the “more about this page” section for specific sources, enhancing source credibility in cases where Wikipedia or the Google Knowledge Graph lacks existing information.
Google’s new tools are part of the company’s ongoing efforts to combat misinformation online, offering users the means to verify image authenticity, fact-check claims, and access additional source information. These resources empower users with enhanced tools to navigate the digital landscape, fostering a more informed online environment.
