FRANCE. Paris. A man beheaded a history teacher for showing caricatures of Prophet Mohammed in his class. The assault took place on the outskirts of Paris near a school in Conflans Saint- Honorine.
The assailant was shot dead by French police as they were trying to arrest him. Meanwhile, French anti-terror prosecutors are investigating the case. Prosecutors said they were treating the incident as “a murder linked to a terrorist organisation” and related to a “criminal association with terrorists”.
On Friday, the police arrived at the crime scene after receiving a call about a suspicious individual roaming near the school. After arriving there, the police found the dead man and the suspect with a knife-like weapon. The suspect threatened to harm the police officers as they tried to arrest him. Due to this, the police opened fire and injured him severely. The suspect later succumbed to his injuries.
The attack comes only days after a follower of the Islamic State terrorist group attacked a police officer outside Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris with a hammer. He was then sentenced to 28 years in jail by the French judiciary.
In a similar incident, a 25-year old Pakistani man was charged with wounding two people with a meat cleaver to avenge the publication of caricatures of the Prophet. The caricatures were published by the satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo.
Seventeen people were killed during the attacks that heralded a wave of Islamist violence in France. Around 250 lives have been claimed so far due to the terrorist attacks.
