France Knife Attack: Terror Investigation Launched following Tragic Killing of a Teacher  

Regional authorities reported that the police had arrested the assailant

FRANCE: A French school witnessed a deadly knife attack. On Friday, a knife attack took place in a school in the city of Arras in northern France, leaving one teacher dead and numerous others hurt, according to police and regional officials.

Regional authorities reported that the police had arrested the assailant. French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin also broke the news on X.

He wrote, “A police operation took place at the Gambetta high school in Arras. The perpetrator was arrested by the police.”

According to a police source, quoted by the French media outlet BFMTV, the attacker is a former student of the school who is in his 20s. There are also media reports of the attacker shouting “Allahu Akbar”.

According to authorities, the man is of “Chechen origin” and is well-known to the security services for his participation in radical Islam. As a part of the investigation, the attacker’s brother has also been apprehended, according to the French media.  

The investigation into the deadly incident is now being handled by anti-terror prosecutors in France. They defined the attack as an “attempt at murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise.”

The teacher, who had died in the knife attack, was a French language teacher at Gambetta High School, as per reports. Injured persons include a security guard and another teacher, according to sources.

During the incident, students were said to be confined within the school premises. Fortunately, it has been confirmed that none of the children sustained any physical injuries during the attack.

Later on Friday, President Emmanuel Macron and Education Minister Gabriel Attal will visit the school. Naima Moutchou, a vice president of the French National Assembly, extended the house’s unwavering support and sincere sympathies to the victims, their families, and the broader educational community.
