UNITED STATES: In a daring and ambitious endeavor, Guillermo Sohnlein, the co-founder of OceanGate, has set his sights on an extraordinary mission – establishing a floating colony of 1,000 humans on Venus, Earth’s scorching twin planet, by 2050. Despite recent setbacks and controversies, Sohnlein remains steadfast in his determination to push the boundaries of innovation and explore the possibilities of human colonization beyond our home planet.
Sohnlein, who parted ways with OceanGate in 2013, is now the chairman of Humans2Venus, a company dedicated to realizing his visionary goal. In an interview, he exuded confidence in the project’s potential success, stating that building a colony on Venus is “aspirational” but “very doable” by 2050.
One of the most significant challenges to establishing a human colony on Venus is the planet’s harsh and inhospitable environment. Venus is notorious for its hurricane-force winds and sulfuric acid clouds, making it a seemingly uninhabitable destination. However, Sohnlein’s optimism is founded on research by NASA, which indicates that a small area about 30 miles above Venus’ surface might theoretically support human survival.
Despite this research, Sohnlein has yet to provide specific details on how the proposed colony would manage the perilous hurricane-force winds and other hazards. Nevertheless, he remains undeterred, expressing faith in the capabilities of engineers and scientists to overcome the myriad challenges posed by space exploration.
The recent submersible disaster involving a vessel operated by OceanGate’s co-founder, Stockton Rush, has raised questions about the safety and viability of such ventures. The submersible disappeared in mid-June and later suffered a catastrophic implosion en route to the Titanic wreckage. However, Sohnlein’s focus has now shifted to his grand vision of sending humans to Venus.
“I have spent over four decades doing whatever I could to help humanity become a multi-planet species,” Sohnlein passionately stated in a blog post on Humans2Venus’ website earlier this year. His childhood dream of space travel has driven him to pursue this bold mission and continue pushing the boundaries of human exploration.
While Sohnlein’s aspirations may seem audacious, his passion and dedication to expanding humanity’s presence beyond Earth’s confines have garnered attention and support. With more research and technological advancements, the possibility of a floating human colony on Venus becomes less of a distant dream and more of an attainable goal.
