Flooding Responsible For Outbreak of Diseases in Nigeria – Red Cross

Nigeria. Kebbi State: The Secretary-General of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Alhaji Abubakar Ahmed Kende has attributed the cause of the recent outbreak of diseases, such as cholera and other infections to flooding in Nigeria.

He, therefore, pleaded to residents to avoid building houses on water channels, as water will always find its way and in the process, it might affect the structures.

Kende made the statement at the official flag-off of the distribution of relief materials to the victims of the disaster in Kebbi state.

Affected local communities

 He said that the relief materials were an effort to give succour to affected persons of the 2020 flood misfortune in Tiggi, Babuce and Bayawa communities of Kebbi state.

The gesture, according to him, was supported by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) alongside the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society.

The relief materials were distributed to about 100 casualties of the flood disaster.

Distributed items

The materials include 100 (25kg) bags of rice, 100 (10kg) bags of beans, maize and sorghum, four-litre kegs of palm and groundnut oils, and some domestic items.

“In our visitation to the affected areas, it was revealed that flood tide is the main problem of the affected communities, therefore, we called on the federal and state government, traditional rulers and well-meaning individuals to find a solution to the threat”, Kende said.

The Chairman of Augie local council of Kebbi State, Alhaji Lawali Mohammed who was represented by the Director Social Development, Alhaji Musa Abubakar Argungu, applauded the efforts of the federal government and advice the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the items.
