NIGERIA. Abuja: Not less than four persons have been confirmed dead and properties worth billions of naira have been destroyed as flood ravaged Trademoore estate in Lugbe, Abuja.
Occupants noted that the flood appeared in the early hours of Monday after a heavy downpour.
Justin Uwazuruonye, Head of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Abuja Operations Office, told newsmen that four persons have been confirmed dead in the incident, 166 houses and 26 vehicles have been submerged by the flood.
Residents narrating their ordeal
The Chairman of the Trademore Estate Residents Association, Adewale Adenaike said that as of 2 p.m on Monday, they could not ascertain the identities of the casualties.
Adenaike said the third body evacuated by the National Emergency Management Agency around 10. a.m was that of a male who came to buy medicine in the estate.
He was said to have sat in his car hoping that the water level would subside but the water eventually took him and his new car away.
Another resident, whose business centre was affected, Mr Chisom who spoke to newsmen said that his office is affected by the flood. “My laptops and office systems are all gone”, he said.
A policeman at the station confirmed the flood but said no one was in the cell when the flood took place.
Residents returning back their business places after the incident
Some of the residents, mostly those that live around Imo Street, one of the most affected parts of the estate, were seen cleaning their properties after the rain had ended.

The police station in the estate, which was deserted on Monday as a result of the water level, was open to the public.
An officer who pleaded anonymity because he was not authorised to speak told newsmen that the station lost quite a number of vital documents.
Officials from the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), led by its Vice-Chairman, Lawrence Onuchukwu visited the scenes of flooding and pledged support for the residents.
Causes of the flood according to some residents of the area
Some residents said the flood has become a usual occurrence in the estate during the rainy season.
While some attributed the incident to the promoters of an estate who channelled water towards their area.
