INDIA. New Delhi: The second phase of COVID-19 vaccines for senior citizens over age 60 and for citizens in the age group 45 to 59 years with comorbidities began today. Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi was the first one to take his first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, at AIIMS New Delhi at 6.25 AM today, becoming the first beneficiary in the second phase of nationwide vaccination against the coronavirus.
PM Modi was given a dose of the home-grown Covaxin developed by Bharat Biotech and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). Later he tweeted an image of himself taking the first dose of the vaccine. and tweeted, “Remarkable how our doctors and scientists have worked in quick time to strengthen the global fight against COVID-19,” and urged all eligible to take the vaccine.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also interacted with the nurses who administered him the domestically developed vaccine. Sister P Niveda, who administered the first dose of the vaccine to the Prime Minister, said, PM asked her where she belongs to, and after vaccination, he said, “Is it done already? Didn’t even feel it.”Apart from Covaxin, Pune-based Serum Institute’s Covishield, developed in partnership with Oxford University and pharma giant AstraZeneca, is also being used in the vaccination drive which began on January 16.
In a tweet, the Prime Minister said, “Took my first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at AIIMS. Remarkable how our doctors and scientists have worked in quick time to strengthen the global fight against COVID-19. I appeal to all those who are eligible to take the vaccine. Together, let us make India COVID-19 free!”
