NIGERIA. Abuja: Lack of adequate monetary allocation by the federal and state governments to the purchase of preventive means and basic training for health workers has been said to be the main reason for the failure of the family planning system in Nigeria.
During an induction meeting of champions and advocacy in Abuja, the Chairman of the Management Committee of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), Dr. Ejike Orji, talked about this.
He noted that the government spending money on family planning will be the main way to derive home national development.
Orji, therefore, pleaded for the government’s attention to the family health on the upcoming World Contraception Day (WCD).
The mission is to improve awareness of all contraceptive methods so young people – regardless of whether they are male or female, married or unmarried, and sexually active or not – can make informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health.
“I called for standard budget allocation and assigned importance to family planning in Nigeria”, Orji added.
“Family planning is an important instrument to strategize and prepare for the future. If Nigeria is willing to be successful, the government must include 27 percent state-of-the-art contraceptive consistency by 2020; but to date, the rate is still 12 percent.”
“The main reason for not meeting the national target is the need for improved family planning budgeting, even with year-after-year federal and state governments allocate funds in yearly budgets for contraceptive purchase, logistics, training, and retraining of health experts,” Orji said.
Access to modernized contraceptives will allow families to enjoy healthy timing between births, decrease the danger of mothers, add to the survival of living children and the nation’s health. Child spacing will increase the economic participation of women, advanced mothers’ lives, and child survival.

Talking about the National Family Planning Scheme, Orji said, “The 2020-2024 National Family Planning scheme of the Family Health Department of the Federal Ministry brings out the government’s determination, aims, and vision for ultramodern family planning service delivery, together with the government’s agenda of 2030 family planning.”
“Also must solicit for the additional funding in nonage health to improve the standard of efficient health among youth,” he added.
