EUROPE. European countries have recorded a significant increase in COVID-19 cases from the last few months. Countries like Spain and Ukraine are highly affected by the pandemic. Madrid, the capital city of Spain, has seen a sudden rise in COVID-19 cases. Due to this, the government has put new restrictions in the country to control the infections.

COVID-19 situation in Spain

Spain reported a record 5,075 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday. The Madrid administration has been following all the guidelines given by the National Health Ministry of Spain. In spite of that, the situation in Spain continues to worsen. Last week, the authorities ordered several targeted lockdowns for the capital and several other towns.

However, on Thursday, the Madrid regional Supreme Court has annulled central government’s COVID-19 curbs on the city as it believes that the restrictions will affect the fundamental constitutional rights of the citizens.

Meanwhile, the local authorities are being pushed to take the lead in limiting late-night activities as the government believes that more wide-ranging measures could result in another collapse in economic activity.

European countries reimpose lockdowns

Many European countries are imposing lockdowns to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Several cities like Berlin and Paris have imposed stricter laws to rein in the social activities which can spread the virus.

In France, President Emmanuel Macron’s government has ordered the bars to close for two weeks. The French government is also planning to put on more restrictions. Daily infections in France have increased by 18,746, bringing the seven-day rolling average to the highest level yet.

In Italy, the government has extended emergency powers to January 31. The country has ordered its citizens to wear face masks in public places. However, the COVID-19 situation in Italy is more contained as compared to other European countries.

Berlin is also fighting against a surge in COVID-19 infections. The German capital has the worst outbreak among the country’s 16 states over the last seven days.
Meanwhile, Germany has exceeded 4,000 COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours.

The country is seeing a sudden rise in COVID-19 cases for the first time since early April. If the figure continues to rise, the citizens of Berlin will be restricted from domestic travel. According to the reports, some districts have already exceeded the threshold.

According to reports, German Chancellor Angela Merkel is going to hold a meeting with different officials from major German cities on Friday.
