QATAR: England and France had a good run in this year’s FIFA World Cup. Both teams will now face each other in the quarter-finals. Let’s take a glance at England and France’s journey so far.
England vs. Senegal
Harry Kane, the captain of England, scored his first goal of the FIFA World Cup 2022’s knockout round as England defeated Senegal 3-0 on Monday at the Al Bayt Stadium.
Kane scored England’s second goal in the first half after struggling during the Qatar World Cup group stage. The legendary forward is England’s second-leading scorer in international competition.
England was guaranteed a spot in the World Cup quarterfinals thanks to goals from Jordan Henderson, Harry Kane, and Bukayo Saka.
In the quarterfinal round of the Qatar World Cup, England will play against the reigning champions, France.
In their previous group-stage match, the English team eliminated Wales from the Qatar tournament.
So far, England has scored nine goals which is also their most goals at a FIFA World Cup.
France vs Poland
Olivier Giroud became France’s undisputed all-time leading scorer in Sunday’s record-breaking 3-1 victory over Poland. Kylian Mbappe also scored two goals.
Before halftime, Mbappe sent a pinpoint pass to Giroud, who smashed it past a diving Wojciech Szczesny to score his 52nd goal for Les Bleus. Despite France’s constant pressure, they were unable to break down a resilient Poland defence.
After the break, France kept up the pressure, and Giroud nearly added a second goal when he glanced Jules Kounde’s cross just past the near post. In contrast, Mbappe scored in the 74th minute with a firm kick from just inside the penalty area that found the top corner.
