INDIA: RRR and The Elephant Whisperers were the two films that this year brought honour to Indian cinema by winning Oscars.
The Kartiki Gonsalves-directed The Elephant Whispers won the Academy Award in Documentary Short Film category. The maiden India film showcased the love and care Belli and her husband Bomman have for the abandoned baby elephants at the government-run Theppakkadu Elephant Camp, in the Nilgiris District.
Amidst winning the Oscars race, Tamil Nadu’s chief minister, M K Stalin, felicitated Bomman and Belli with honor and presented them with cheque for 1 lakh each, a shield, and shawls.
Apart from this, Kartiki directly landed in Chennai, bringing the award to the state. She met Bomman and Bellie, who played the lead roles in the documentary. After that, the director posted a photo of the couple holding the trophy in their hands and giggling out loud with sheer happiness.

The Elephant Whisperers director wrote, “It’s been a long four months since we’ve been apart, and now I feel like I’m home… @theelephantwhisperers.”
The moment is cherished by various other actors, and Vishal Dadlani commented, “Easily my favorite Oscars picture ever.”
On the other hand, Esha Gupta posted red-heart emojis. Niharika Konidela used an emoji of a face holding back tears. Mini Mathur wrote, “Love their smiles. Hugs and more hugs.”
Aahana Kumra posted, “Oh, my god.” Soon after this, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin awarded a cash prize of Rs 1 crore to director Kartiki Gonsalves.
The Elephant Whisperers is currently available on Netflix. The 40-minute-long documentary gives cinephiles a sneak peek into the lives of the tribal couple as they take care of and develop a bond with orphaned baby elephants, Raghu and Ammu.
The Elephant Whisperers’ became the first Indian production documentary to win an Oscar.
