UNITED STATES: Dune is the most nominated film for the Academy Awards with ten nominations, trailing only Power of the Dog. However, the film did not receive any nomination for best director.
A powerful space opera which acts as a tale of betrayal
Based on the novel of the same name by Frank Herbert published in 1965, the movie centers on Paul Atreides, the ducal heir of House Atreides. Who had these recurring visions of Chani, a mystery young Fremen woman, links Paul to Arrakis fate. Arrakis is a harsh desert planet that holds an enormous Spice, the most valuable resource in the Dune universe. It is stated that whoever has authority over the spice has dominion over the entire cosmos. Leto Atreides, Paul’s father, must journey to Arrakis to secure his family’s future. But, unknown to him, dark forces are preparing to turn the tables, kicking off the political narrative of this space opera. In this deadly world of Dune, those who overcome their dread will endure the scourge of their fate.
This magnum opus space opera has received nominations for best cinematography, best sound, best original score, best costume design, best production design, best-adapted screenplay, best makeup and hairstyling, best film editing, and best visual effects.
Despite the film’s outstanding directing style, Denis Villeneuve was overlooked for the Oscar in Best Director. Academy has nominated the following in the Best Director: Jane Campion for Power of the Dog, Steven Spielberg for West Side Story, Kenneth Branagh for Belfast, Ryusuke Hamaguchi for Drive My Car, and Paul Thomas Anderson for Licorice Pizza.
Dune dominates BAFTA awards 2022
In addition to the Academy Awards, Dune has been nominated for the BAFTA Awards 2022. It was set in 11 categories and received the highest BAFTA nomination. It has the most nominations, followed by The Power of the Dog (8 nominations) and Belfast (6 nominations).
2nd highest grosser of Warner Media
Dune has a worldwide gross of around 399 million dollars, with a domestic gross of approximately 107 million dollars. With this box office haul, Dune is Warner Media’s second-biggest grossing film in 2021, after only Godzilla Vs. Kong, which grossed $468 million. However, it is Warner Media’s sole highest-grossing film to be nominated for an Academy Award this year.
Critically recognised Dune spawns a sequel
Dune was well-received by critics and the audience. It has been placed in Rotten Tomatoes’ top 100 movies of 2021 with a total rating of 83 %. All of this is sufficient enough to make a sequel to this outstanding film. Warner Media has announced a sequel for the film, including Denis Villeneuve as director. Dune: Part 2 will be released in theatres on 20 October 2023.
