UNITED STATES: The Duffer Brothers, creators of Stranger Things, are working on a Netflix live-action Death Note series. Although the streaming giant already adapted Takeshi Obata and Tsugumi Ohba’s Death Note in 2017 under the directorial vision of Adam Wingard. According to Deadline, it appears that Netflix is preparing for a second attempt to adapt a popular anime series, with the Duffer Brothers serving as the show’s creators this time.
Death Note focuses on Light Yagami, a high school student who discovers a supernatural book that, upon writing a person’s name in it, promptly kills them with a heart attack in 40 seconds. As soon as he starts killing all the criminals worldwide and claiming to be God, Light becomes the arch-rival of a detective known as L.
Netflix holds the record for poorly developed live-action versions of popular anime
Another Death Note live-action adaptation appears in the works after Netflix renewed its agreement with the Duffer brothers to produce additional projects in the wake of Stranger Things’ enormous popularity. The previous live-action anime version faced harsh criticism and a significant backlash from the audience. With its caricatured portrayals of the main characters, Wingard’s adaptation fell far short of the anime.
Netflix is known for producing substandard live-action anime adaptations. Fans have harshly criticised the streaming giant’s live-action Cowboy Bebop adaptation. The first season of the show was discontinued due to the underwhelming reception. However, after examining the Duffer Brothers’ contributions to the project and their work on Stranger Things, some hope is on the horizon.
Stranger Things’ success lands another project in the Duffer Brothers’ repertoire
Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2 premiered on July 1, 2022, following the jaw-dropping cliff-hanger that left fans spellbound. With the release of Volume 2 on Netflix, the streaming behemoth has continued its way breaking the Neilsen streaming record.
Besides the Death Note adaptation, the Duffer Brothers have also revealed their concept for a potential spin-off series for Stranger Things. They have also highlighted the spin-off’s distinctive setting compared to the main plot. The duo also stated that the upcoming spin-off would be entirely different in an interview with Collider.
