In a tweet, the city’s media office said, “Extensive vaccination campaign against COVID-19 off in Dubai on Wednesday. Vaccination will use Pfizer-BioNTech’s vaccine and is free of charge.”
American pharmaceutical companies Pfizer and BioNtech had previously claimed that their vaccine was 95% effective in preventing COVID-19. The United Arab Emirates has been conducting vaccine trials for a long time. Earlier this month, they also said that the shot has protected around 86% of people against the virus.
Earlier this year, Dubai imposed a lockdown to halt the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Due to this, the Expo 2020 exhibition which was scheduled to start in October was delayed by a year.
The UAE has seen over 195,000 cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the outbreak. The nation has been reporting more than a thousand cases per day for the past two months. In August, the cases were quite low as the country recorded less than 164 COVID-19 cases in a day. However, the country has a case-fatality rate of 0.3% which is low when compared to other countries.
