Drowning Prevention: Niger Communities Get Life Jackets As Rain Approaches

Every year, thousands of lives are lost to boat mishaps in Niger state; one of the cause is due to inability to swim and the life jackets will help keep the victims afloat until help comes

NIGERIA. Niger: In a bid to prevent drowning as the rainy season begins, the Niger state government has provided 100 life jackets to communities in Shiroro local government area of Niger state.

The communities are known to always be affected by the drowning of the residents who mostly use water transportation as their main type of transportation.

The Niger State Commissioner of Works and Infrastructural Development, Honorable Mamman Musa handed over 100 life jackets to the Commissioner of Youth and Sports, Honorable Emmanuel Umar on behalf of the communities.

Musa who is overseeing the Transport Ministry on behalf of Commissioner Ramatu Yar’adua, stated that the life jackets are being given due to the recent boat tragedy that occurred two weeks ago in river Shiroro were over 47 people lost their lives.

According to the Works Commissioner, the Governor is pained over losing the productive citizens of the community who are predominantly farmers and fishermen around the axis.

He assured the riverine communities that the state government is doing all it can to prevent drowning in the state especially as the state records lots of deaths during the rainy season.

Receiving the life jackets on behalf of the communities, the Commissioner of Youth and Sports, Honorable Emmanuel Umar, appreciated the state government for this gesture.

He said that the life jackets would save a lot of lives during this period expressing optimism that this year, there will be limited loss of lives on the rivers.
