ALTBalaji & ZEE5’s crime mystery series Dark 7 White follows the story of Prince Yudhveer Singh Rathore aka Yudi, a young and power-hungry politician for whom losing is not an option. Dark 7 White is essentially a youth-oriented political thriller that tries to capture the aspirations and restlessness of the youth through the story of Yudi’s meteoric rise in politics that serves as a parable revolving around the idiom: what goes around comes around. The series is narrated nonlinearly in a refreshingly quirky storytelling style with an undercurrent of dark humour.

Directed by Satwik Mohanty, the series comprises 10 episodes of roughly 20 minutes each. Dark 7 White has a solid ensemble cast featuring the likes of Sumeet Vyas, Nidhi Singh, Jatin Sarna, Monica Chaudhary, Shekhar Chaudhary, Kunj Anand, and Tanya Kalra. The web series is based on Shweta Brijpuria’s book ‘Dark White’ published by Leadstart. Interestingly, the publishing house has already unveiled the revised edition of the book, with the cover featuring the show’s poster depicting Sumeet Vyas’s Yudi sitting on a chair with the rest of the characters.

What’s really clever is that the lead character gets killed half way into the very first episode and from there on it’s the dead man who narrates the story of his rise in state politics leading to his murder on the very day he is set to become the youngest CM of the state. The investigating officer who is assigned the task of unearthing the conspiracy behind the high profile murder is ACP Abhimanyu—a man originally responsible for setting Yudi, then a disorientated college student, on the path of political one-upmanship. Having seen Yudi’s political flight from up-close, Abhimanyu is not unaccustomed to the brand of opportunistic politics that catapulted Yudi and his friends to the corridors of power. A tough nut to crack, Abhimanyu trusts no one. His duty means everything to him. If there is anyone capable of unraveling the mystery it’s Abhimanyu. Will he succeed?

Within its budgetary limitations, Dark 7 White serves as a compelling tale about the ever-changing faces of friendship that’s based on sheer opportunism in the game of power. The series proves to be an endlessly engaging experience thanks to its cleverly twisted narrative and some brilliant performances on offer from Sumeet Vyas (superb in a fiendishly delightful negative turn), Jatin Sarna (compelling as the no-nonsense cop Abhimanyu), Monica Chaudhary, Nidhi Singh and others in the ensemble. ALTBalaji and ZEE5 have a clear winner here. The credit must also go to Shweta Brijpuria for penning a novel with all the right ingredients.
