Cyclonic Storm ‘Asani’ Approached the Andhra Pradesh Coast and Cancelled 10 Flights from Chennai

INDIA: On Tuesday, heavy rains lashed Chennai and its suburbs as severe cyclonic storm ‘Asani’ approached the Andhra Pradesh coast. Asani is expected to arrive on Wednesday.

Due to the heavy rain, ten flights from Chennai airport were cancelled, including those to Jaipur, Visakhapatnam, Mumbai, and Hyderabad.

The Chennai suburbs of Alandur, Madipakkam, Poonamalle, Maduravoyal, and Meenambakkam are experiencing heavy rains, as are Koyambedu, Anna Nagar, Choolaimedu, and Nungambakkam. Heavy rains are also falling in the Pammal area near the airport.

Thunderstorms with light to moderate rain are expected in Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Chennai, Puducherry, and other northern parts of Tamil Nadu over the next few hours, according to the India Meteorological Department.

The Indian Coast Guard has already dispatched the ‘ICGS Shaurya’ and ‘ICGS Sagar’ for any contingency, including rescue operations following Cyclone Asani’s landfall. The Coast Guard has issued a precautionary safety advisory to ships and oil handling companies. Suburban train services in Chennai and its suburbs were disrupted as a wind-swept object became entangled on an overhead power cable.

According to a statement issued by the Southern Railway on Tuesday, the external object swept in on the overhead power cable has been removed, and services have resumed.
