INDIA: Punjab Kings (PBKS) beat the Mumbai Indians (MI) by 13 runs in a high-scoring encounter at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. MI won the toss and chose to bowl first, hoping to chase on a high-scoring surface like the Wankhede.
Punjab Kings Vs Mumbai Indians
The first three overs of the Punjab innings were sedate, but the scoring rate picked up after Prabhsimran’s 16-run over against Jason Behrendorff.
Punjab Kings lost wickets regularly, and Mumbai seemed to have the upper hand with some quiet overs from Hrithik Shokeen and Cameron Green, despite a 101-meter six from Livingstone.
However, the game turned around when Arjun Tendulkar, the last-over hero of the last match, conceded 31 runs in an 8-ball over, including a wide and a beamer.
Punjab Kings’ Sam Curran (55 off 26) and Harpreet Singh (41 off 28) accounted for most of the runs, with Jitesh Sharma joining the party with a 7-ball 25. Punjab Kings ended up with a massive total of 214-8.
Mumbai Indians had to go big early, but Ishan Kishan fell to the new swinging ball. Rohit Sharma and Cameron Green took a toll on the poor deliveries and kept rotating the strike. Rohit Sharma fell after a quick 27-ball 44 after trying to cut loose for a few overs, leaving Mumbai reeling at 84-2 in the 10th over.
The back-in-form Suryakumar Yadav and Cameron Green launched an all-out assault, hammering the PBKS bowlers in 75 runs partnership off 30 balls. Green departed soon after notching up his half-century, and Yadav brought up his fifty in the following over off 23 balls, his fastest.
Suryakumar Yadav’s wicket silenced the Wankhede crowd, leaving two new batters, Tim David and Tilak Varma, to chase down 33 off 14 deliveries. With 16 runs needed off the last over, Punjab Kings’ Arshdeep put up an exhibition of death bowling, knocked over Varma and Nehal Wadhera while conceding just two runs, sealing Mumbai’s fate.
Cam Green top-scored for the Mumbai Indians with 67 off 43, while Suryakumar Yadav scored 57 off 26.
Arshdeep was the pick of the bowlers for Punjab Kings, ending with figures of 4-29 in his four overs.
The win was crucial for Punjab Kings as they moved to the fifth position on the points table. Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, are in the seventh position with only three wins from six matches.
The result will boost Punjab Kings’ confidence, and they will look to carry this momentum into their next match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore on 30th April.
