Cabinet Approves India-US Pact On Cooperation In Geology Research

INDIA. Mumbai: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between Geological Survey of India (GSI) and the Florida International University (FIU), the USA, on cooperation in the field of Geology.

The identified area of cooperation between the two participants will be: development of the geological knowledge, research regarding the geologic and tectonic environment of post collisions magmatism in India-Asia collisional margin, geologic history, and tectonics of the Eastern Himalayan Syntaxis, an official statement said.

Developing cooperative projects in the fields of regional geological, geochemical, petrological, and multi-isotopic studies related to the evolution of post-collisional magmatic belts (Ladakh Plutons). Exchange of information on technology and geoscientific data and other areas of mutual interest will be decided upon under the agreement.

The objectives of the MoU are to understand the geologic and tectonic environment of the generation and emplacement of post-collisional magmatism in India-Asia Collision margin in particular and to construct a model of post-collisional magma genesis in continental collision zones in general and to construct the geologic history and tectonics of the Eastern Himalayan Syntaxis.

The activities involve the exchange of information on technology and geoscientific data, research regarding the geologic and tectonic environment of post-collisional magmatism in India-Asia collisional margin, geologic history and tectonics of the Eastern Himalayan Syntaxis, and developing cooperative projects in the fields of regional geological, geochemical and multi-isotopic studies related to the evolution of post-collisional magmatic belts (Ladakh/ Plutons). The proposed MoU is expected to provide an institutional mechanism between GSI and FIU, on cooperation in the field of Geology.

The Ladakh Batholiths is part of the Trans-Himalayan Plutonic Belt, extending over 2500 km along the southern margin of the Eurasian continent. It is an exposed area of plutonic rock at the surface, subjected to huge pressure differences between their former location deep in the earth and new location at or near the surface. The batholiths are a very large igneous intrusion extending to an unknown depth in the earth’s crust. Although studies have been carried out, several aspects remain unexplored. As such the proposed pact will immensely help in studying geological changes in the Ladakh region.
