INDIA. Mumbai: A British-era bomb was found while the road repairs and other works were underway at Kohinoor Housing Society near Chroma Centre in Pimpri in Pune district creating a commotion in the area, on Monday morning.
The bomb was found when excavation work was going on in the society compound. After spotting the bomb, the bomb detection and disposal squad of the Pimpri police led by ACP Sagar Kawade rushed to the spot. The area was cordoned off and the inspection was carried out. A retired army officer was contacted over a video phone call. He confirmed that the object resembled the bomb used in the war.
After the inspection, a bag of sand was placed in JCB’s bucket and the bomb was placed in it and taken for further investigation. The bomb was subsequently handed over to the defence authorities. The bomb will be disposed of after legal proceedings.
Such British-era bombs are found in the Pimpri and adjoining areas of Pune occasionally during the excavations. They have been lying on the ground for years and are now being unearthed.
A similar British-era bomb was found during the excavation work at the Kendriya Vidyalaya in Dehuroad in Pimpri on December 30, 2020. A JCB driver who found the bomb had reported the matter to the police. Also, yet another British-era bomb was found at the construction site of Punawale in Hinjewadi in Pimpri Chinchwad in the same month.
