INDIA. Mumbai. Mumbai’s suburbs witnessed heavy downpours between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. This is the heaviest rains received by the suburbs in this season. The intensity of rains reduced around midnight on Tuesday. However, thundershowers were witnessed early morning followed with heavy rainfall.
Many parts of Mumbai are now facing the waterlogging issue. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has requested all government and private offices remain closed for today.
Many regions affected by heavy downpours
Several flood-prone areas of the financial capital were affected by rains. Regions of central Mumbai like Matunga, Kurla, Sion, and Masjid Bunder experienced flooding. The suburban regions of Mumbai also faced the wrath of heavy rains.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued a warning for Wednesday. The IMD has classified 64.5-115.5mm as moderate rains and over 200mm is considered as heavy rains. Mumbai is most expected to experience torrential rains above 200 mm today.
Meanwhile, BMC commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal has also appealed to the citizens to take precautions and stay at home. Road traffic was impacted as many vehicles broke down in the water.
Impact on transportation sector
The Central Railways has suspended services from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus to Thane and Vashi. Express train services have also been suspended. Similarly, the submerged train tracks compelled the Western Railways to suspend all services from Churchgate to Andheri.

The weather department has issued a yellow alert (which is the possibility of heavy rains) to Mumbai, Thane, and Sindhudurg. However, a gradual decrease in the intensity of rainfall by Wednesday evening is predicted by the weather department.
