GERMANY: Police and firefighters announced on Friday that a 14-metre-high “AquaDom” aquarium in a hotel in central Berlin burst in the early hours of the day, necessitating the closure of a nearby street due to the leaking water.

Two people were injured by glass shards, according to Berlin police on Twitter, and the incident also caused “incredible maritime damage.”

The cylindrical aquarium, home to approximately 1,500 tropical fish, contains over a million gallons of water.

It is built inside a Radisson Blu hotel’s foyer and features a clear-walled elevator that guests of the Sea Life entertainment complex can use.

Berlin’s fire department tweeted that more than one hundred emergency personnel were on the scene.

In the tweet, Berlin’s firefighting service adds that the water is leaking from the severely damaged aquarium. The cause of the incident is still unclear and is under investigation.

On Twitter, the Berlin police advised motorists to avoid the area, stating that the aquarium is “massively” leaking water.

Berlin’s public transportation office stated on Twitter that due to a huge amount of water on the road, the nearby Karl-Liebknecht Street had been partially closed off.

The AquaDom is the world’s largest cylindrical freestanding aquarium, according to the Sea Life website.

Early on Friday, photos and videos that appeared to be taken by hotel guests showed extensive damage to the transparent aquarium and spread throughout the ground floor of the hotel.

The debris from the shattered aquarium also spilled out onto the streets. The AquaDom in Berlin, Germany, is a cylindrical aquarium made of acrylic glass with a transparent elevator.

Upon arrival at the opulent hotel, the AquaDom aquarium greeted the guests. Visitors could have a drink or eat under it, located just below the aquarium and above the hotel bar.

To get a closer look at the fish in the aquarium, people could get to a two-story glass platform in the middle using a transparent lift.
