GERMANY: Bayern Munich defeated VfL Bochum 7-0 in the Bundesliga held on Sunday to revenge a loss from the previous campaign. Forward Sadio Mane scored two additional goals to bring the win to his team.
Since leaving Liverpool in the offseason, Mane has scored three goals; the Senegal star wasn’t an issue for Bochum last year because Thomas Reis’ squad upset Bayern Munich with a 4-2 home victory in February of 2021.
Bayern Munich’s spectacular show
“It was a tremendous game from us, people are still talking about it.” Thomas Reis commented before the game on Sunday. The sides’ previous meeting, a 7-0 thrashing in Munich that was Bochum’s worst Bundesliga loss, dampened expectations for a repeat.
Bayern Munich had already scored eight goals in two games this season, and it didn’t take long for Leroy Sané to open the scoring in the fourth minute of the game for the visitors. Thomas Müller and Kingsley Coman then joined Sané. Coman pulled the ball back for Sané to curl inside the right post.
Manuel Riemann denied Sané’s subsequent attempt in the tenth minute, and the German winger came even closer ten minutes later. In the 25th minute, Matthijs de Ligt headed in a corner to score his first goal for Bayern Munich since transferring from Juventus.
The Dutch defender was starting for the very first time for his new team. The third goal was scored by Coman in the 33rd minute, a gift from the Bochum defence after Riemann stopped Müller’s original attempt.
In the 40th minute, Mané again seemed to have the ball in the net, but the goal was nullified because it came off his hand. However, it didn’t take long for Senegal forward before Coman set him up in the 43rd minute. Saidy Janko was avoided by Mané, who then tucked the ball inside the near post.
Ten minutes before Cristian Gamboa scored an ‘own goal’ while attempting to stop Sané from reaching Serge Gnabry’s ball, Mane sent Riemann the wrong way to score from the penalty spot in the 59th minute. In the 76th, Gnabry scored goal number seven. Gerrit Holtmann was denied a late consolation by Manuel Neuer.
