UNITED STATES: A new official trailer for Margot Robbie’s ‘Barbie’ is out, giving audiences a closer look. The movie’s plot has remained a mystery up until now, but the new trailer finally exposes what Greta Gerwig’s summer blockbuster is all about, just in time for Ken and Barbie’s July 21st debut into the real world.
Margot Robbies as Barbie rules the new trailer
The teaser begins with Ryan Gosling’s Ken hearing from Margot Robbie’s Barbie about a big party with rehearsed dance routines. Several Barbies and Kens can then be seen enjoying their lives until Barbie brings up death. Not everything is as it should be.
Barbie senses something is not right when she takes a cold shower and develops flat feet, among other strange happenings. Exhausted by their days in Barbie land, where everyone seems to go by the names of Barbie and Ken, Margot Robbie’s Barbie and Ryan Gosling’s Ken leave their homeland.
Barbie and Ken are depicted interacting with the real world in the new clip, which is significantly different from their pink-coded, artificial world. Barbie strikes a man who smacks her buttocks, and Ken ends up posing with multiple LAPD mugshots while on Venice Beach.
Meanwhile, news that a real-life Barbie is roaming the streets of Los Angeles is starting to frighten people in our world. When Barbie and Ken are arrested in reality, chaos ensues. While evil toy manufacturers strive to put Barbie back in a box, the two create connections with people.
Gerwig and the ensemble cast made an effort to keep the movie’s narrative a secret from viewers, but when pictures and videos of them shooting in Los Angeles surfaced online last year, fans began to catch onto the film’s plot.
“I can’t tell you how mortified we were, by the way. We look like we’re laughing and having fun, but we’re dying on the inside. Dying. I was like, This is the most humiliating moment of my life,” Margot Robbie told Jimmy Fallon last year regarding the set of photographs that went viral online last year.
The movie’s synopsis reads, ‘After being expelled from Barbieland for being less than perfect-looking doll, Barbie sets off for the human world to find true happiness.’
Alongside Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie, the film will feature a star-studded cast, including Will Ferrell, Nicola Coughlan, Connor Swindells, Kate McKinnon, Emerald Fennell and many more.
Gerwig is the director and co-writer of Barbie along with her husband, Noah Baumbach. The movie is bankrolled by Heyday Films, Mattel Films, and Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment. Executive producers include Mattel’s Ynon Kreiz and LuckyChap’s Josey McNamara.
