Farmers’ Protests: A Turning Point For India?

2

INDIA. Punjab: India is currently witnessing the largest protest in its history. A protest that has unfolded faces of the BJP government. Despite several rounds of discussion between the government and protestors, the deadlock stands unresolved. Farmers and their supporters continue to sit in the biting cold on Delhi borders.

In his latest speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called the protestors ‘parasites’. Prime Minister Narendra Modi referring to farmers as “parasites” has deeply hurt the farming community, leaders of unions protesting against the Centre’s agriculture laws.

Prime Minister Modi has not paid a single visit to the borders where lakhs of the farmers are peacefully protesting.

What’s Happening In India?

It now seems like ‘the world’s largest democracy’ is marching towards ‘dictatorship’. Due to the hostile and inhumane behavior towards ‘annadaata’ (food-givers or farmers). Leaders and activists from all corners of the world are voicing their views on the ongoing farmer’s protest.

Earlier, Meena Harris, niece of Kamla Harris had tweeted about the farmers’ protests. In her tweet she said that the most populous democracy was under assault. In line with this tweet, she added, ” ‘fascist dictators aren’t going anywhere’; people need to organize themselves and fight for the wrong against the wrong.”

Recently, climate activist Disha Ravi was arrested in the toolkit case. The toolkit on the farmers’ protest had come under the police scanner after Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg tweeted it on February 3, with police claiming the sequence of events in the farmers’ protests, including the violent incidents at Red Fort on Republic Day, was a “copycat” of the alleged action plan in the document.

Disha’s arrest had sparked anger among the youth. Many leaders came in support of Disha Ravi. Priyanka Gandhi, P. Chidambaram, Shashi Tharoor took to Twitter to share their views with hashtags #ReleaseDishaRavi, #IndiaBeingSilenced. Anyone who has been supporting the farmers has been treated like ‘criminals’ by the BJP government.

The recent tweets by Amit Shah, Kangana Ranaut, Narendra Modi has demeaned Sikhs and farmers as ‘terrorists’. People supporting farmers have been termed as ‘anti-national’. A nation that has been known for democracy, diversity in religions, freedoms, and rights have failed on all grounds owing to the ongoing protest. The austere, cold nature of government has brought a black mark on the nation.

How many more deaths, how many more suicides, how many more voices, how many more cries will it take for Narendra Modi to withdraw black farm laws?

The Roots Of BJP Government Seem To Dwindle As Farmers Continue Protest Against Farm Laws

1

INDIA. New Delhi: With farmers gaining support from all corners of the world, anger and anti-BJP sentiments amongst the public is skyrocketing. The stronghold of the BJP government seems to be falling down due to the new farm law farmers are protesting against. Narendra Modi has been addressing the farmers from states like Gujrat and Madhya Pradesh but avoided engaging in any conversation with the farmers protesting at the Delhi border.

The farmer agitation is taking new turns with each passing day. Hindu extremists have been disrupting a peaceful farmers agitation. The deadlock between the government has resulted in more than 30 farmers losing their lives.

One of the protestors at Singhu border said, “Government is saying that these laws will be beneficial for us, but why are you trying to give us benefits that we do not want?” Such questions need to be addressed by the government under the democratic setup. The National Media which is controlled by the BJP government has misled the public by shifting a farmer-centric protest to a protest by Sikhs calling it a demand for ‘Khalistan.’ The distressed conditions on the border has led to people dying or committing suicide.

The afternoon of 16th December 2020 came with mournful news of the death of Saint Baba Ram Singh Ji. He took away his own life by shooting himself. He could not bear the plight of protesting farmers.

He supported farmers and donated five lakh rupees. Along with this, he distributed 5000 blankets to the protesters sitting on Singhu Border.

The 65-year-old saint was a head priest of the Sikh temple in the Singhra village in Nissing area of Haryana’s Karnal district. Before shooting himself, he wrote a suicide letter.

The suicide letter states, “I have witnessed the plight of the farmers, who are on the streets, struggling for their rights. I am hurt to see that the government is not giving them justice. It is a crime. It is a sin to oppress and it is a sin to suffer. Many did what they could, Many even expressed their wrath by returning awards and honours given to them,”

The followers of Saint Baba Ram Singh Ji from around the world stated that it is not a suicide. They call it a sacrifice done for the farmers. People gathered in thousands and lakhs to pay their final regards to the saint and said, “Maharaj ji ne shahadat diti hai kisana vaste, Modi Ji, hun te kisana de sun lo.” (Maharaj Ji sacrificed his life for farmers; Modi Ji, now listen to the farmers).

The Farmers protest has brought out the arrogant attitude of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his officials. The government officials ridiculed the protestors for eating pizzas on the border and having proper arrangements. While the same government kept quiet when the farmers were committing suicide.

Saint Baba Ram Singh Ji said many people gave away their prestigious titles to show solidarity with the farmers. Human life is the most prestigious gift which he is giving away for the sake of farmers.

Controversial Jewelry Advertisement Sparks Protests In India

1

INDIA. Imagine the year is 1947, the year of partition with Hindus and Muslims killing each other. An advertisement during that era to promote Hindu/Muslim unity would surely have not been accepted, but more than a decade later, a jewelry advertisement trying to promote such unity has sparked controversy across the secular nation.

Jewelry ad promotes religious unity

To welcome the upcoming festival season Tanishq, a jewelry brand of Titan, released an advertisement showing a young pregnant Hindu with her Muslim mother-in-law.

The young woman is dressed beautifully to celebrate her baby shower. As the young woman sits down, she reminds her mother-in-law that this ceremony does not happen in her (Muslim) household. Her mother-in-law gently replies that keeping daughters happy is a tradition in every household.

The advertisement was not appreciated by some Indians, including a few leaders of the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP). The advertisement demonstrates that the young woman is married into a family that loves her like their own child. They go out of their way to celebrate an occasion not traditional to their own faith.

This ad campaign led to the boycott of Tanishq with, #BoycottTanishq trending on Twitter. Those who oppose Hindu-Muslim unity called Tanishq a ‘pseudo-secular Tanishq’ and claimed they were pro-jihad.

Ad pulled in wake of controversy

The company felt compelled to take down the advertisement to stop the spread of hateful messages. Tanishq released a statement stating the purpose behind the advertisement.

Shashi Tharoor tweeted on the controversy, “If Hindu-Muslim ‘ekatvam’ irks them so much, why don’t they boycott the longest surviving symbol of Hindu-Muslim unity in the world — India?”

After receiving all the hateful, negative comments and threat messages, Tanishq released a statement that acknowledged the public sentiment. To ensure the well being of its staff, the advertisement has been withdrawn.

The take down of the advertisement has been seen as a mark of failure in a country whose roots support unity.

Myassar: Teens Create An Anonymous Safe Space For Indian Youth To Share Experiences Of Discrimination

INDIA. New Delhi. On 22 June, six teenagers from across India started Mayassar (meaning “available”), a volunteer organization to address homophobia, sexual harassment, mental illness, and police brutality.

Feelings of Isolation due to COVID-19 lead teenagers to create an online safe space for other teens to share challenges

Due to lock-down across India, they began their platform on Instagram and LinkedIn. In the initial stage, they asked people to confess their unheard stories anonymously. In an interview with Transcontinental Times, the Founder, Riya Aggarwal, spoke about how at times people just need an ear to listen to them, which is why Mayassar was created. Confessions are posted anonymously, which gives those who feel alone and silenced a place to share their experiences.

Volunteers have realized just how many people there are who do not feel safe in their homes, schools, workplace, and even in their places of worship.

Many contributors who offered their confessions commented on how mental health is often ignored in India, and Mayassar is contributing their part to bring awareness to sensitive issues that so many feel they cannot share openly.

Future collaborations will help Mayassar connect with more youth

In the future, Mayassar will collaborate with various non-profit organizations to help reach more people. During the interview they quoted Mother Teresa, “We are not social workers. We are contemplatives in the heart of the world.”

Mayassar does not work for an income but for a positive outcome.

History Repeats Itself: Oscars Delayed For The Fourth Time

The most prestigious award ceremony Oscar’s delayed amidst the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic affecting the Hollywood industry.

The fear of pandemic doesn’t seem to come to an end but everyone needs to learn to live with it. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced an eight-week delay in the most prestigious award ceremony 93rd Academy Awards. The new date of the big night is supposed to be 25 April 2021.

“For over a century, movies have played an important role in comforting, inspiring, and entertaining us during the darkest of times. They certainly have this year. Our hope, in extending the eligibility period and our Awards date, is to provide the flexibility filmmakers need to finish and release their films without being penalized for something beyond anyone’s control,” said Academy President David Rubin and Academy CEO Dawn Hudson in a joint statement.

History repeated itself, the last time Oscars were postponed was way back in 1981. The ceremony observed a 24-hour delay because of an attempt to assassinate President Ronald Reagen.

Moreover, the eligibility date for the consideration of the best picture has been extended from February 28, 2020, to December 31, 2020, in the wake of the ongoing pandemic. The date has been further shifted to provide justice to the filmmakers who could not release their films due to the ongoing pandemic situation. Yet there are many unanswered questions regarding the big night. Sources have not yet confirmed whether the mass audience would be allowed. It is still uncertain will it be a live event involving red carpet or not.

All the theatres and cinema halls are shut due to follow social distancing. Owing to which the end of the year is tentatively packed with movie releases. The pandemic has come like a jolt on the award ceremonies. Many films to be released by end of the year stand incomplete.
