Tensions Increases after North Korea Fires More Missiles

0

SOUTH KOREA: The North Korean display of missiles hit a new high today. North Korea launched four ballistic missiles into the sea on Saturday. The United States retaliated by sending two supersonic bombers to the region. The bombers flew over South Korea in a contesting display of military might.

Tensions are rising in the region

The Joint Chiefs of Staff for South Korea said that four missiles with a short range, fired from the west-coastal area of North Korea, travelled around 130 kilometres towards South Korea’s western sea.

This week alone, North Korea has “test-fired” over 30 missiles. The missiles included an (ICBM) launched on Thursday. The ICBM launch triggered evacuation alerts in Japan.

The country’s display of military strength began after the United States and South Korea undertook a massive combined aerial exercise.

According to the South Korean military, two B-1B bombers trained with four F-16 fighter jets from the United States and four South Korean F-35 jets. The air force drills, called “Vigilant Storm,” wraps up on Saturday.

North Korea responded to the joint military exercise

North Korean Foreign Ministry described their military actions as a fitting answer to the exercise. The ministry termed the exercise as the display of “military confrontation hysteria” by the United States.

The country has historically expressed a dislike towards the display of American force in the troubled region. The country described the B-1B as a “nuclear strategic bomber.”

The B-1B flyovers were a show of force when tensions had arisen between North and South Korea in the past. The last time B-1B planes were flown in the region was in 2017, amidst another provocative display of weapons by North Korea.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff described the participation of the B1B bombers in the joined military drills as a demonstration of readiness to respond to North Korean provocations and the commitment of the United States to defend its ally.

Chip Ganassi Racing Team’s Cadillac Runs a 24-hour Test at Full-length Sebring

0

UNITED STATES: Chip Ganassi Racing’s Cadillac V-LMDh completed a fruitful 24-hour test at the full-length Sebring Circuit in Florida. The AXR Cadillac team for the IMSA season also ran their tests at the circuit.

Sebring will host the second round of the upcoming 2023 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Chip Ganassi Racing team will run a car in the 12 hours race and the 1000-mile season-opener for the World Endurance Championship.

The driver lineup for the Chip Ganassi Racing squad

The Chip Ganassi Racing team’s driver line-up for the IMSA GTP category will feature former formula 1 driver Sebastien Bourdais and Renger van der Zande, who will drive the Ganassi #01 Cadillac. Chip Ganassi’s IndyCar driver, Scott Dixon, will be the extra driver for the IMSA’s endurance rounds.

Alex Lynn and Earl Bamber will pair up to form Chip Ganassi Racing’s driver line-up for the World Endurance Championship, with Richard Westbrook being the extra driver.

All six drivers were in action during the Sebring test. Alex Lynn commented that the track time was crucial for the drivers and the crew members to learn the track and seek more performance.

Action Express Racing (AXR) also ran a test program in the other Cadillac for their drivers, Alexander Sims and Pipo Derani. Sims, a full-time Formula E driver, felt that the bumps and the uneven nature of the Sebring circuit were a learning experience and that he could understand the car’s behaviour better.

Kalvin Parker, Cadillac Racing’s assistant program manager, said it was helpful to have two cars running two different programs at the circuit, including night running, to get drivers used to the new headlights in changing track conditions.

Both Cadillacs of the Chip Ganassi Racing team will feature on the grid for the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona, the IMSA season-opener.

The Cadillacs will make their first public runs between 20-22 January next year before the 24-Hour test at Daytona.

Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon Will Resolve Issues before Formula 1 Team-up: Alpine

0

FRANCE: Alpine Formula 1 team backed the French duo of Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly to resolve their rivalry ahead of the pairs team-up in an All-French driver line-up for the 2023 Formula 1 season.

Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon have a long-standing grudge since their karting days

Alpine’s CEO, Laurent Rossi, explained that the previous rivalry between Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon would not affect the working relationship between the duo in the upcoming season.

The Alpine team expect both drivers to work collaboratively and carry the team forward. Rossi made it clear that there would be no hierarchy within the team. He added that even now, there are none between the experienced Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon, maintaining that both drivers had an equal status within the team.

The rivalry between Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly isn’t a secret within the Formula 1 paddock. However, the reason behind the beginning of the interpersonal rivalry between the two Formula 1 drivers is unknown. The common saying is that the grudge began developing between the two during their karting days.

Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon have one Formula 1 race win under their belts each. Both are technically sound drivers who have performed well in the last couple of seasons with their respective teams.

It remains to be seen which driver is the faster out of the two since they haven’t raced each other in Formula 1 with equal machinery. However, both drivers have proven their mettle in the midfield.

Pierre Gasly had held on to a historic Formula 1 win at Monza in 2020, keeping the charging McLaren of Carlos Sainz at bay, while Esteban Ocon fended off Sebastian Vettel to clinch his first Formula 1 win at the dramatic 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Alpine will need both drivers to work together to push the team up the Formula 1 grid and challenge for wins and podiums.

ISRO’s RISAT-2 Satellite Re-enters Earth’s Atmosphere

INDIA: On Thursday, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said that the RISAT-2 satellite made an uncontrolled re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere on 30th October. The satellite weighs around 300 kilograms.

The satellite was launched in 2009 by Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV)-C12. The Radar Imaging Satellite (RISAT) was in space for over thirteen years and was defunct before its re-entry.

ISRO monitored the satellite’s re-entry with the Multi-Object Tracking Radar (MTOR). The satellite came down in the Indian Ocean, near Jakarta.

RISAT-2 had a design life span of four years and had 30kgs of fuel onboard. The studies by ISRO confirmed that the fragments of the satellite produced due to the friction of the atmosphere would not have survived the heat generated during re-entry, and as a result, no fragments would have made it to the surface of the Earth.

ISRO emphasized that RISAT-2 re-entered within 13.5 years and added that it complied with all crucial international mitigation guidelines regarding space debris. The re-entry showed the commitment of ISRO towards the sustainability of Outer Space. The agency had predicted that the satellite would impact the Indian Ocean near Jakarta on 30th October 2022, at 00:06 UTC.

The data obtained from RISAT-2 were helpful in various space applications. According to ISRO, the four-year life span of the satellite was extended to thirteen years by proper maintenance of its orbit and planning of its mission by the operations team concerned with the satellite.

The satellite had exhausted its fuel. Hence there was no distress regarding the risk of contamination or explosion on re-entry.

The Indian System for Safe and Sustainable Space Operations Management (IS4OM) facility in ISRO Telemetry, Tracking, and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Bengaluru has been monitoring the re-entry of RISAT-2 since last month.

France’s Minister Makes Racial Comments at a Colleague, Interrupts National Assembly

0

FRANCE: France’s National Assembly meeting was suspended after the minister of the National Rally party made racist comments aimed at opposition minister Carlos Martens Bilongo.

The opposing minister, Carlos Martens Bilongo, had raised the issue of migrants stranded on a boat in the Mediterranean, to which Grégoire de Fournas shouted, “go back to Africa.”

The entire assembly went quiet in shock at the minister’s comments. The opposition party demanded that the minister of Gironde, a state in France, be stripped of his position.

According to the party, it was evident that Grégoire de Fournas had stooped down to racism and targeted his colleague with racist remarks.

Soon after Grégoire de Fournas made the comments, the president of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, identified the speaker and adjourned the meeting for the day.

The political bureau of the National Assembly will come together on Friday at 2:30 p.m. local time to decide on a possible sanction against the minister.

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne reacted quickly to the incident and said racism had no place in the country. She called for strict sanctions against Grégoire de Fournas.

The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, responded through his entourage and said that he was offended by the intolerable remarks.

France’s ruling party refused to attend the assembly until the minister got punished severely.

When asked by BFM TV, a French media outlet, the National Rally minister, Grégoire de Fournas, denied having made the comments in a racial context. He added that he said, “Let them go back to Africa,” referring to the migrants aboard the stranded boat.

He mentioned that he didn’t feel it necessary to apologise to his fellow minister since his sentence was legitimate and not diabolical as his peers made it out to be.

Carlos Martens Bilongo said the elected minister racially targeted him. He added that he didn’t expect to be insulted at the National Assembly. He felt that all people of colour in the country were insulted by Grégoire de Fournas’ comments.

Brazilian Ex-Formula 1 World Champion Nelson Piquet in Fresh Controversy

0

BRAZIL: Brazilian prosecutors have opened an investigation into former Formula 1 world champion Nelson Piquet after a video of him wishing death for president-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Nelson Piquet will testify in front of the Brazilian Federal Police over allegations of inciting violence.

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva narrowly won the presidential election on Sunday against incumbent president Jair Bolsonaro. Nelson Piquet is a vocal supporter of Bolsonaro.

The 70-year-old former Formula1 world champion is among the thousands who took to the streets in protests after the election results were declared. The Brazilian electoral officials have confirmed the election results.

Nelson Piquet, who quipped that he wanted the armed forces to stop Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from taking over the position, was also previously investigated for making racist remarks.

He had used racial slurs while referring to 7-time Formula 1 world champion, Sir Lewis Hamilton, who became an honorary Brazilian citizen earlier this year.

A statement released by the Brazilian Federal Prosecutors office said that the authorities would investigate Nelson Piquet for allegedly inciting violence and provoking rifts between the military and other branches of power.

The prosecutor’s office, in the statement, mentioned that Nelson Piquet has far-reaching popularity. The statement adds that his statements could reach hundreds of thousands of people.

Nelson Piquet and the creator of the video are expected to testify in front of the Brazilian police.

Violence erupts in Brazil after Bolsonaro’s defeat

The supporters of the outgoing president, Jair Bolsonaro, blocked roads across Brazil. Many protestors gathered outside military bases demanding a coup to overthrow the new government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

The hardcore supporters of Bolsonaro claimed they would never accept the presidential election results as it was illegal and fraudulent.

Brazilian truckers who benefitted the most during Bolsonaro’s presidential stint put up most of the roadblocks. Bolsonaro had lowered the diesel prices in Brazil, creating enormous profits for the truckers.

Joshua Little’s Hat-trick Goes in Vain as New Zealand Beats Ireland by 35 Runs

AUSTRALIA: A crucial half-century by skipper Kane Williamson and a disciplined bowling display guided New Zealand to a comfortable 35-run victory over Ireland.

Joshua Little’s hat trick was instrumental in putting the brakes on New Zealand’s score, which seemed to go beyond 200 at one point in the innings.

New Zealand Innings:

The Ireland skipper won the toss and decided to bowl first. New Zealand Openers Finn Allen (32 off 18 balls) and Devon Conway (28 off 33 balls) gave New Zealand a flying start, putting together 52 runs for the first wicket. Mark Adair (39/1) broke the opening stand in the sixth over. After being hit for a six and a four, Adair had the last laugh, dismissing Allen, who was caught at mid-off by Fionn Hand.

Conway and Kane Williamson (61 off 35) were painstakingly slow at scoring runs as boundaries dried up after Allen’s dismissal. New Zealand reached 75/1 after ten overs.

Fionn Hand gave away 18 runs in the eleventh over as the batsmen carted him for a couple of boundaries and a six. Gareth Delany (30/2), bowling the twelfth over, dismissed Conway, who went for a slog-sweep but offered an easy catch to Mark Adair.

Glenn Phillips (17 off 9 balls) went after the Ireland bowling straightaway, hitting boundaries at will. However, his innings ended when Delany fired one full and wide outside the off-stump. Phillips mistimed his stroke as George Dockrell took a well-judged catch at deep extra cover.

Kane Williamson hit a couple of boundaries in the sixteenth over, which yielded twelve runs for the Kiwis. He bought up his half-century with a six over deep mid-wicket in the eighteenth over. He hit a boundary, and another maximum in the final two deliveries as 21 runs came off the over by Barry McCarthy (46/0).

Joshua Little (22/3) got a hat trick in the penultimate over. He dismissed Williamson in the second delivery of the over. He went on to catch James Neesham and Mitchell Santner plumb in front of the stumps off the next two deliveries to complete the second hat-trick of the World Cup.

Daryl Michell (31 off 21) and Tim Southee (1 off 2) took the New Zealand total to 185/6 after twenty overs as Ireland managed to put the brakes on the scoring rate in the final two overs.

Ireland Innings:

Ireland was off to a modest start as Paul Stirling (37 off 27), and Andrew Balbirnie (30 off 25 balls) took their time to get their eyes in. Ireland was 39 for no loss at the end of the powerplay.

Stirling hit a boundary and a six in the seventh over by Mitchell Santner (26/2) as 13 runs came off it. Balbirnie smashed Ish Sodhi (31/2) for a couple of maximums in the next over to steal 16 runs from the over.

Santner returned strongly in his next over to castle Andrew Balbirnie, who inside-edged the delivery onto the stumps. Ish Sodhi took the cue from his spin bowling partner and got the better of Stirling in the tenth over. Stirling mistimed his slog-sweep as the ball missed the bat and crashed into the top of the off-stump.

Mitchell Santner struck again in the eleventh over. Harry Tector (2 off 7 balls) hit a slow widish delivery but only managed to top edge it to Tim Southee at backward point.

Lockie Ferguson (22/3) came back in the fourteenth over and struck immediately. Gareth Delany (10 off 8 balls), who looked in good touch, attempted to cut away an off-pace leg-cutter from the bowler. Conway caught the resulting thick outside edge behind the stumps.

Lorcan Tucker’s (13 off 14 balls) stay at the crease was cut short by Ish Sodhi. Tucker came down the pitch to smack the leggie out of the ground but ended up offering catching practice to Finn Allen at long-off.

George Dockrell (23 off 15 balls) and Curtis Campher (7 off 7 balls) scored 15 runs in the seventeenth over by Trent Boult (38/0). Campher fell in the next over, becoming Tim Southee’s (29/2) first victim.

Ireland kept losing wickets at regular intervals as Fionn Hand (5 off 3 balls) became the seventh wicket to fall. Fionn top-edged an attempted pull shot off Ferguson, who called and caught the resulting skier. Ireland’s hopes of winning the match ended when Dockrell was caught by Williamson two deliveries later.

Tim Southee dismissed Mark Adair (4 off 5 balls) off the first delivery of the last over. Joshua Little had taken a hat-trick earlier, smashed a six off the penultimate delivery. It was of little consequence as the Ireland innings ended at 150/9 at the end of their quota of twenty overs, handing New Zealand a comfortable 35-run victory.

Kane Williamson received the Player of the Match award for his half-century and crucial partnerships, which helped his team post a competitive total that proved too much for Ireland to chase.

Indian Defence Ministry is World’s Biggest Employer: Germany-based Statistics Report

0

INDIA: A Germany-based organisation, “Statista,” released an infographic in which India’s Ministry of Defense is the world’s biggest employer. The Indian Defense Ministry currently employs 2.92 million people, which includes active-duty personnel, reservists, and civilian staff.

Statista is a private organisation based in Germany that provides statistics and data regarding a multitude of issues across the world.

The report said that India’s Ministry of Defense leads the chart of the world’s largest employers with a combined headcount of 2.92 million.

The US Department of Defense, which employs 2.91 million people, was ranked a close second by Statista.

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army was ranked third with 2.5 million employees. The figures for the PLA do not include civilian positions.

Statista added that the Central Military Commission, the Chinese equivalent of the US Department of Defense, may have around 6.8 million employees.

However, Statista did not deem the figure to be reliable enough to be included in the list.

According to the report, Walmart was the company with the most employees worldwide. The retail giant from the US employs around a massive 2.3 million people, according to the latest information.

E-commerce giant Amazon was ranked second among companies. Amazon has 1.6 million employees, far fewer than Walmart’s workforces

The infographic by Statista sheds new light on a 2021 survey, in which total global military expenditure was reported to be USD 2113 billion.

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) stated the United States, Russia, China, India, and the United Kingdom as the largest spenders on military expenses in 2021.

The five nations together were responsible for 62% of the total expenditure on military purposes.

As per the SIPRI report, the US spent $801 billion on the military in 2021, while China spent the second highest amount of $293 billion. India spent $76.6 billion and was ranked third in the world.

Ferrari 499P Hypercar: The Scarlet Team’s Challenger for the 2023 Le Mans

0

ITLAY: Ferrari unveiled the new 499P LMH (Le Mans Hypercar), announcing its entry in the 2023 edition of the World Endurance Championship. The scarlet hue of Ferrari will be seen on the Le Mans grid after nearly 50 years.

The 499P was named after the individual cylinder capacity, and the prefix ‘P’ was for ‘Prototype’. The 499P’s V6 engine is a member of V6 engine family, which powers numerous street-legal sportscars.

Ferrari is set to make a historic return to the world of endurance racing

The 499P hypercar has a carbon-fibre monocoque chassis. It is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 engine. The engine is combined with a mid-rear power unit with an electric motor that powers the front axle. The engine churns out a total of 680BHP and is mated with a seven-speed sequential gearbox.

The hybrid hypercar has all-wheel drive. The carbon disc braking system harvests kinetic energy from the front axle under braking and stores it in the battery for redeployment whenever the driver needs the extra energy.

The 499P’s design was inspired by the iconic Daytona SP3. The hypercar’s red livery embraces the yellow accents as a gesture towards the 312PB, the Group 6 Prototype from 1971.

The 499P features the Ferrari trademark large louvres around the wheel arches to decrease pressure inside the wheel housings. The rear end of the car is distinguished by a horizontal twin rear wing.

Antonella Coletta, the boss of Ferrari racing, said that the 499P confirmed the historic team’s commitment to endurance racing. Ferrari is yet to announce the driver roster for the next year’s World Endurance Championship. Coletta claimed that the team will comprise drivers who are currently a part of GT racing family.
