INDIA: On Thursday, BJP swept the Gujarat polls by making a historic victory. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Gujarat had broken all records and created history by showering love on the BJP despite the party being in power in the state for 25 years.
On the other hand, in Himachal Pradesh, Congress took the victory after a neck-and-neck fight with the ruling saffron party.
The counting of ballots in the elections of the state legislative assemblies of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh began at 8:00 am on Tuesday.
In Gujarat, the 182-member assembly saw the BJP gain 156 votes, breaking the historical record, while Congress, with only about 17 seats, fell far behind. AAP only managed to secure six seats, making gains from Patidar and tribal seats.
After a 27-year reign in Gujarat, the BJP has boosted its gains in seats by a big margin.
In the 2017 election, it claimed only 99 seats, 57 fewer than 2022’s result. Meanwhile, Congress dropped down to 17 seats in today’s result after taking 77 seats in the 2017 election.
BJP’s phenomenal victory in Gujarat
As the BJP headed for a memorable victory in Gujarat, PM Narendra Modi expressed his gratitude to the state’s voters by writing a tweet.
He wrote, “To all hardworking @BJP4Gujarat Karyakartas, I want to say – each of you is a champion! This historic win would never be possible without the exceptional hardwork of our Karyakartas, who are the real strength of our Party.”
In another tweet, Modi also thanked his hometown, Gujarat, saying, “Thank you Gujarat. I am overcome with a lot of emotions seeing the phenomenal election results. People blessed the politics of development and at the same time expressed a desire that they want this momentum to continue at a greater pace. I bow to Gujarat’s Jan Shakti.”
AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal also thanked the people of Gujarat, despite getting fewer seats than other parties, for helping his party breach the BJP’s “fortress” of Gujarat.
Congress’ Rahul Gandhi said that they would regroup, put in a lot of effort, and keep fighting, despite Congress’s poor performance in Gujarat.
Congress’ win in Himachal
Meanwhile, in Himachal Pradesh, out of a 68-member house, Congress won with a majority of 40 seats, the BJP gained 25 seats, and the other party got 3 seats.
Rahul Gandhi, who also praised his party’s win in Himachal Pradesh, tweeted, “Heartfelt thanks to the people of Himachal Pradesh for this decisive victory. Hearty congratulations to all Congress workers and leaders. Your hard work and dedication really deserves the best wishes for this victory. I assure you again, every promise made to the public will be fulfilled at the earliest.”
Today’s result in Himachal is in contrast to the previous election in 2017. In 2017, the BJP secured victory in Himachal Pradesh by winning 44 of the state’s 68 seats, while Congress won only 21 seats.
