The attack occurred in the capital city, which was the site of the deadliest riots during the nationwide upheaval last year. The incident happened while a young Kurdish woman was under the morality police’s custody.

Two policemen and “all four terrorists” were killed in the incident, according to state television. Various media accounts cite a police spokesman as saying that three assailants had died.

Sistan-Baluchistan is one of Iran’s poorest provinces and a key conduit for drug trafficking. It borders Pakistan and Afghanistan.

According to human rights organisations, the Baluch minority, which may number up to 2 million, has endured discrimination and repression for many years.

Zahedan has experienced weekly demonstrations since September 30, 2022, despite a decrease in disturbances.

According to Amnesty International, during the crackdown on protestors, security forces killed at least 66 individuals. A police station chief and the commander of Zahedan’s police were later fired by the authorities.

Authorities attribute the beginning of the shooting on September 30 to Jaish al-Adl, also known as the Army of Justice, a Baluch extremist organisation that they claim has safe havens in Pakistan.

No organisation, not even Jaish al-Adl, claimed to have played a part.
