INDIA. Mumbai: The first-ever “ASEAN-India Hackathon–2021” recently organized by the Union Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Union Ministry of External Affairs, proved to be the best brain storming session with national and international students coming out with the best talent.
The “Hackathon” was organized in line with the vision of ASEAN – plan of action on science, technology, and innovation (APASTI) 2016-2025. It was adopted by the ASEAN Ministers for Science and Technology at the 9th Informal ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Science and Technology (IAMMST) held on 29 th October 2016 in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
The initiative was implemented by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), with the support of nodal agencies from all ten ASEAN countries.
The “Hackathon” aimed at enhancing the cooperation between India and ASEAN countries in science, technology, and education, through collaboration. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, it was conducted online using a digital platform, indigenously developed by the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Cell.
Over 330 students along with 90 mentors participated in the 36 hours “Hackathon” organized last week.The students were divided into 54 cross-country teams. With each team having six students and two mentors. The number of participants were-Brunei-07, Cambodia-24, India-80, Indonesia-31, Lao PDR-29, Malaysia-30, Myanmar-30, Philippines-20, Singapore-28, Thailand-21, and Vietnam-32.
These diverse teams competed on developing the best solution for 11 problem statements provided by different international organizations and government bodies. Participating countries did not compete against each other, rather they collaborated, which means, each team had participants from different countries working together during the “Hackathon”.
The problem statements
The problem statements included: “Qualification of Marine Litter using image processing”, “Prediction of Oil spills events at sea(POSEatSea)”, “Cost of air pollution to solar power generation(CAPsolar)”, “Fishing boat activity clustering and timeline studying (FACTS)”, “Flagging of (AIS) Inactivity Data (FIND)”, “Automated Animal Identification and Detection of Species(AAIDeS)”, “Traffic Management system in coastal regions”, “Enhancing coastal security”, “Blockchain in logistics” and “To track, provide alert to ships before piracy attack and continue to pinpoint track the attacking boat info to CG, etc” and “Online Remote Proctoring”.
The winners
The prize amount: winner- USD 2700, Runner-Up- USD 1500, Encouragement Award-USD 600. The winners were-“Qualification of Marine Litter using image processing”- Winner-Team Leader -Bera Rahul Dilip, Runner up-Pranav Sharma, Encouragement awards-Prasanna Rajendra, Azis Naufal, and Aung Khant Thaw. “Prediction of Oil spills events at sea(POSEatSea)”-Winner- Parth Sarthi Prasad, Runner up- Chirag Singla, Encouragement Awards- Zwe Htet, Prabhu Sharan Singh and Rushika Nalamwar.
“Cost of air pollution to solar power generation(CAPsolar)’-Winner-A’in Hazwani Ahmad Rizal, Runner up- Utkarsh Mishra, Encouragement awards-Lokesh Attarde, Ayush Singh and Rishi Hiran. “Fishing boat activity clustering and timeline studying (FACTS)”-Winner- Tapaswin Padhy- Runner up-Madhu Raut, Encouragement Awards- Satyam Bharti, Parvathy Nathan S and Gurmeet Singh. “ Flagging of (AIS) Inactivity Data (FIND)” Winner- Faaiq Fajari Fauzan, Runner up- Nadine Yap, Encouragement Awards- Sai Mahidhar, Akash Kumar and Rabia Umar.
“ Automated Animal Identification and Detection of Species(AAIDeS)”-Winner- Vikrant Chauhan, Runner-Up- Rohan Kulkarni, Encouragement awards-Maheep, Harish Sanmugam J and Shivam Kumar. “ Traffic Management system in coastal regions”-Winner-Yukta Shah, Runner-Up- Siti Aisah Janaji, Encouragement Awards- Santosh TYSS, Vishal Kanakamamidi, and Niketan Gulekar. “Enhancing coastal security”-Winner- Hitendra Bhadauria, Runner up-Dinesh Rajashekaran, Encouragement Awards-Ayush Fadia, Abhinav Gautam, and Harish Kumar. “ Blockchain in logistics”-Winner-Pranav Agarwal, Runner up- Rushikesh Sanjay Pupale, Encouragement Awards- Savneet Kaur, Sahil, and Animesh Sinha.

ASEAN
Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) includes Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Vietnam. It is headquartered in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Ms.Madhu Raut was a team leader of a group of 6 students who represented IIT Ropar, Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines. An M.Tech, Cybersecurity student of Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), Pune, she was runner up and won a prize of Rs 1.1 lakh. The DIAT team was guided by Dr. Sunita Dhavale of the Computer Science Engineering(CSE) Department.

In his inaugural address to “Hackathon” the Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ said that the “Hackathon” will be the enactment of six fundamental virtues of our civilization: respect, dialogue, cooperation, peace, prosperity, and innovation.
In his address to the grand finale Union, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar said that “Development of coastal infrastructure, protection of marine ecosystems, and providing sustained livelihoods to coastal communities are of topical interest to both ASEAN and India”.
