As per the central probing agency, Wankhede and the other four officers accused had made a demand of Rs 25 crore as a bribe from actor Shah Rukh Khan for not framing his son Aryan Khan amid the drugs that were allegedly seized from the cruise ship.

Earlier, ED raided different locations where Wankhede and his family reside, and at that time, the officer called the process a bonus to his honesty. Later, he got postponed from his current designation and was facing serious charges of corruption.

Now, Wankhede and the other accused in the case have been charged with criminal conspiracy and extortion under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act pertaining to bribery.

The son of the renowned actor, Aryan, was set free from all charges, citing a lack of evidence. However, following an intel report, the NCB set up a special team to probe the case and its officers.

Wankhede’s lawyers, Aabad Ponda, Rizwan Merchant, and Sneha Sanap, sought permission from the Bombay High Court to dismiss the petition against the officers and include additional grounds.

As per the lawyers, the sections under which a person who offers or gives a bribe to a public servant to induce him or her and gain undue advantage shall also be prosecuted. Meanwhile, the court extended the interim protection granted to Wankhede until July 20, 2023.
