ARMENIA. Renewed clashes in and around Nagorno-Karabakh has shattered a ceasefire between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Despite a ceasefire being established between the two countries, officials in the disputed zone have reported clashes in the Hadrut region. The enclave is an internationally recognized part of Azerbaijan, but is controlled by the ethnic Armenians.
According to reports, nearly 500 people, including more than 60 civilians have been killed in the conflicts. Earlier, Armenia and Azerbaijan had fought a war over the Nagorno-Karabakh region which went on for six years. The war ended in 1994 with a ceasefire, but no peace treaty.
On Saturday, Azerbaijan reported that a missile struck homes in the city of Ganja, killing seven people. The clashes have spread outside the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh. However, Armenia completely denied responsibility for the destruction. According to reports, the heaviest clashes took place in Hadrut on Monday.
The Russian-brokered ceasefire was implemented to allow the two countries to exchange prisoners and recover bodies from battle sites. Armenia is again consulting the Russian government to seek advice on the ceasefire.
Many people are coming forward to help victims in both countries. US celebrity Kim Kardashian West announced on social media that she will donate $1m to a fund for Armenian victims of the conflict. Kim Kardashian West is also of Armenian heritage.
Meanwhile, Kardashian West’s siblings, Kourtney and Khloé Kardashian, also made social media posts for the cause. Although they did not disclose their donation amounts.
Other celebrities such as Elton John, Cardi B, and Offset have also voiced their support for Armenia on social media. However, they took down their posts after backlash from Azerbaijan’s supporters.
