UNITED STATES: After a five-year saga, Apple has taken the first steps towards compensating certain iPhone users who claimed that the company deliberately slowed down the performance of their devices.
The dispute began in 2016 when iPhone 6, iPhone 7, and iPhone SE users alleged that their phones were intentionally throttled by Apple.
While Apple initially defended its actions as a measure to prevent unexpected shutdowns, it eventually opted for resolution, settling a class-action lawsuit in 2020 for a substantial payout of up to $500 million.
Several sources reported that Apple is now in the process of disbursing compensation to users who were affected by the performance slowdown.
Tyson Redenbarger, a legal advocate for iPhone users, anticipates an approximate payout of $65 per person, potentially marking the conclusion of the longstanding issue.
The company’s initial explanation for slowing down older iPhones was to ensure stability, as reported by The Verge. However, discontented users filed a class-action lawsuit in 2018, challenging Apple’s intentions.
The list of impacted models included the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 7, and iPhone 7 Plus.
After vehement disagreements, Apple altered its stance and agreed to allocate funds ranging from $310 million to $500 million to address the grievances.
While some claimants were initially offered $25 each, certain iPhone owners rejected the initial offer, leading to a recent verdict confirming that no additional compensation will be provided.
For those wondering about eligibility, iPhone 6, 7, and the first SE model owners can receive compensation if they register their claim before October 6, 2020.
This required providing their device’s serial number on a designated website created by Apple to address user complaints regarding performance issues. The compensation process symbolizes a shift in payment methods, showcasing the evolution of technology in settling such matters.
With this development, Apple aims to put an end to a prolonged chapter in its history, striving to resolve a dispute that highlighted the intricate balance between technological innovation and user satisfaction.
