INDIA: Popularly known as the ‘Booklet guy’, Amrut Deshmukh is determined to cultivate a better and consistent reading habit amongst the youth of India. A Chartered Accountant by profession, he worked as a Fund Manager for a few years until he decided to own a startup. Through Mission Make India Read, Amrut is giving back one of the greatest gifts to society, ‘the gift of reading’.
Amrut emphasizes that the Booklet guy is not a brand or a celebrity. Booklet Guy is a spirit that believes in the power of reading habits. He believes that reading habits can help an individual to grow rich in health, wealth, love, and happiness by making them empathetic human.
The inspiration behind Mission Make India Read
In the book India 2020, Former Indian President and Aerospace scientist, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam talk about his dream to see India as a developed nation. Amrut strongly believes that his mission is one step towards making his dream come true. To make his mission more meaningful, he has written “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective READERS”.
The true inspiration behind the Booklet app came from Twitter. The app was created to explain a concept in limited words and time which is similar to Twitter’s 280-word character limit. Today Amrut has more than 16 lakh young enthusiasts who are reading books with him on his free mobile app called “Booklet”.
“I stand for Booklet App. I stand for the higher purpose of reading habit. If after reading this interview you are inspired to read at least 5 pages of a book before going to bed tonight, I would declare my mission accomplished!”
Every week he reads a bestselling book and prepares a twenty-minute book summary of it. He also records the summaries in his own voice and shares them through Booklet, a free app, developed by him.
“If I am not reading I am not changing and if I am not changing I am not growing. Books can make us think differently,” he added. Due to this strong belief, he has a burning desire to cultivate reading habits amongst the youth of India.
Future of entrepreneurship
Amrut believes that in order to make a positive impact, people need a change in mindset. A mindset to walk the path that’s least traveled – to take risks, face ridicule and embrace uncertainty and fear. Reading autobiographies of great leaders like Martin Luther King Jr., Mahatama Gandhi was a turning point for him. He thinks that Mission Make India Read can bring a paradigm shift in man’s mindset.
“When mindset changes, individual changes, when individuals will change, society will change. When society changes, nation goes through a transformation,” he said.
Today’s world is full of income disparity. Around 80% of the world’s wealth is in the hands of few people.
“What the world needs is not just entrepreneurs but ‘Social Entrepreneurs’ – young boys and girls with the mind of Steve Jobs and a heart of Gautam Buddha,” Amrut said.
Giving an inspiring message to the young people, Amrut said, “People come to you for ‘Why’ you do, not for ‘What’ you do. More than an app, SEO, advertising, and funding, a successful enterprise has a strong ‘Why’ – a robust belief system. While you may hear, motivation causes actions; always believe it is Action, which causes motivation”
