Allegra Maria Del Pilar Baiocchi To Lead Costa Rica As The UN Resident Coordinator: United Nations

COSTA RICA. UN Secretary-General António Guterres recently appointed Allegra Maria del Pilar Baiocchi of Italy as the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Costa Rica, with the present Government’s approval.

Ms. Baiocchi brings more than 20 years of experience in development, humanitarian and peace and security work to the position, acquired at the United Nations and externally.  Within the Organization, she most recently served as the Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Cameroon.

She also held senior positions at the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Department of Peacekeeping Operations in Burundi, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Senegal, Sudan and South Sudan, as well as at Headquarters in New York and Geneva.

The Resident Coordinator is the leader of the United Nations Country Team (UNCT), and her role is to bring together the various UN agencies to improve the coherence and effectiveness of their work for the development. She acts on behalf of the UN’s system impartially,  in ensuring a strategic United Nations position in each country.

Before joining the United Nations, Ms. Baiocchi worked with non-governmental organizations and in academia. She holds a master’s degree in political science and development economics from the University of Rome “La Sapienza”.

The Office of the Resident Coordinator is the main support structure for the Resident Coordinator and Country Team activities for the strengthening of the joint activities of the United Nations system. It coordinates UN operational activities for development so that United Nations assistance is aligned with national development priorities and the demand for capacity-building following international treaties and development goals.
