UNITED KINGDOM: The top seed Carlos Alcaraz had a successful debut at Wimbledon, while Elena Rybakina dashed British hopes with a dominant performance. Rainy conditions allowed second-seeded players Aryna Sabalenka, Petra Kvitova, and Ons Jabeur to advance to the Round of 16.
In the men’s draw, Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas secured victories, setting up a thrilling matchup between Matteo Berrettini and Alcaraz in the semifinals. Alcaraz, the world number one, faced a tough challenge in the fourth set but prevailed and expressed confidence for his next match against Berrettini. Berrettini, who defeated Alexander Zverev, showcased his skills with powerful serves and forehands.
Medvedev, the third seed, overcame an early setback in the opening set to defeat Marton Fucsovics and reach the fourth round. Despite his previous struggles on grass, Medvedev expressed growing confidence on the surface.
In the women’s singles, Rybakina delivered a demoralizing defeat to Katie Boulter, winning convincingly in just 57 minutes. Rybakina, battling illness and disrupted preparation, sent a strong message to her competitors.
Other notable performances include Beatriz Haddad Maia becoming the first Brazilian woman since 1968 to reach the quarterfinals, Sabalenka securing a comfortable victory, Jabeur’s comeback win against Bianca Andreescu, and Kvitova defeating Stevanovic.
Holger Rune’s victory over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in a thrilling match showcased his resilience, while Christopher Eubanks continued his impressive development with a win against Chris O’Connell, serving a remarkable total of 72 aces.
