African Development Bank Appoints New Regional Managers

IVORY COAST. Abidjan: The African development bank (AfDB) has announced changes to its top management with the appointment of new director generals and their deputies for the bank’s regional offices.

In a statement made available to Transcontinental Times, the bank has appointed three directors and five deputy directors.

Serge NGuessan has been appointed Director-General of Southern Africa; he is a Canadian citizen.

Nnenna Lily Nwabifo, a Nigerian is Director General for East Africa; a Tunisian, Leila Feirah Mokadem will be Director General for Southern Africa.

The Central African office will have Dr. Solomane Kone as its deputy Director-General while Nwabifo will be deputized by Dr. Abdul Kamara who is a Sierra Leonean at the East African office.

Maline Blomberg will be deputy director for North Africa. She is a citizen of Sweden and Kennedy Mbekeani a Malawian national will deputize Mokadem at the southern African office.

A Cape Verde National, Dr. Joseph Martial Ribeiro will be Deputy Director-General for the West Africa office.

Commenting on one of the appointments, the Bank’s President, Akinwumi Adesina praised Nwabifo as a goal-getter.

“Her vast experience and solid track record in strategic functions across the bank, attest to her capacity to effectively lead the team rise up to the development challenges and ensure continued development impact and improve lives of Africans in the East African region,” he said.

History of the Bank

The idea to establish the AfDB was made in 1963 among ministers from 23 independent Africa states.

Its headquarters were opened in 1965 in Abidjan, Ivory coast but its operations began in July 1966. Its core duty is to ensure social transformation and economic integration of the African continent.
