AFGHANISTAN. Kabul: Around 25 people were dead and 22 injured after unidentified gunmen attacked Kabul University, Afghanistan on Monday. The university was hosting a book fair at the campus when the incident took place. Iranian ambassador to Afghanistan, Bahador Aminiam was also present at the university along with other dignitaries.

According to the reports, the death toll is likely to increase as most of the injured students are in critical condition.

Afghanistan’s interior ministry spokesperson, Tariq Arian said the attackers were killed in the battle with security forces. In a statement, Arian said, “Three attackers were involved. One of them blew up his explosives at the beginning, two were brought down by the security forces.”

According to the reports, the attack happened at the university’s eastern side. Interestingly, this attack was the second attack on an educational instate in Kabul in as many weeks.

Meanwhile, the Taliban issued a statement denying their involvement in the assault. However, the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack. Last week, IS also claimed a brutal assault on a tutoring center in Kabul Nowadays, Afghanistan has seen a rise in violent attacks even as the government and Taliban negotiators have been meeting in Qatar to try to broker a peace deal.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the ”cowardly attack” and expressed his support for “Afghanistan’s brave struggle against terrorism.”
