Afghan University Students Create Smart Door To Disinfect COVID-19 Virus

The team has spent about $1,000 and spent over 5 months for the design and implementation of the project

AFGHANISTAN. Herat: A group of second-year students of Computer Science(CS) faculty at Herat University has successfully created a smart door to disinfect the COVID-19 virus and measure the temperature of a person. The door counts people, disinfects them, and measures their body temperature.

The students from the CS faculty who are a part of the team are, Mahsa Bijimi, Zaynab Mohammadi, Fatemeh Zabihi, and Homayoun Mohammadi. While talking to Transcontinental Times about the innovation, Mohammadi, said that the main motive of the door is to fight the COVID-19 virus. He also added that the intelligent door can be used in various other sectors.

Every year, the ITCC competitions are held between different Afghan universities. In this, CS students from different Afghan universities present their IT projects. The main aim of these competitions is to build a device that can solve an existing problem in society.

”We had the idea that the idea is of having a device for disinfecting the virus, and the human process is not involved in the other. We are studying in the second year of computer science. Three girls gave me the suggestion of joining their groups. I thought it would be better to share a strong team from Herat, ” Mohammadi said.

The working principle of the project

“In the first stage, the gate functions automatically. After that, the body of a person is completely disinfected by the gate. Finally, the person’s temperature is checked before they are allowed to enter.”, the team members told Transcontinental Times.

The team has spent about $1,000 and spent over 5 months for the design and implementation of the project. They also believe that the project’s capabilities can be increased with more investment. Additional equipment like a metal detector scanner can be used at the gates of mosques, schools, and universities.

Also this year, in the mid of the COVID-19 outbreak, the Afghan all-girls Robotics team created ventilators out of unused car parts to help the country in providing ventilators.
